The Law and Jesus
The Law and Jesus
The Covenant of Eden (obedience/trust)
Do not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Eat of the tree of life…
Man chose the knowledge of good and evil.
The Covenant of Noah (Salvation)
God provided a means of salvation and made Promise to those who got into the ark.
The Covenant Of Abraham (Faith)
Obedience to follow God’s lead by faith.
By Faith Abraham believed God and Left His fathers House.
The Covenant of Moses (Deliverance)
Through Moses came the Deliverance from Slavery to the promised land, Israel becoming God’s nation and the Law
Through Moses God Gave His people the Law. Commandments that clearly Described good and evil.
Covenant of David (Kingdom)
God established a King over Israel
New Covenant Jesus (Fulfilled all the above Covenants and Gave us His Holy Spirit of Truth)
God’s work now is in us. The Kingdom is now in us!
If we were able to keep the law we would be saved.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
There was a sense of confusion.. Does Jesus support the law? which one and how many?
Jesus explains……
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.
So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
“But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!
Christ didn’t come to abrogate the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill them.
In The following verses Jesus will breakdown this process and give us examples of what this means.
Jesus is speaking to the Jews, about what they understood to be the Law.
The Jews had 3 kinds of laws.
1 The Moral Law
2 The Sacrificial Law
3 The Civil Or National Law
A Commentary on the Holy Scriptures: Matthew Homiletical and Practical
Christ has fulfilled the law: 1. The moral law by His obedience; 2. the sacrificial law by His sufferings; 3. the civil or national law by His institutions
Christ fulfilled the Moral Law by His obedience
Christ fulfill the the Sacrificial Law by His sacrifice and suffering
Christ fulfilled the Civil and National Law by His institutions.
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
Today it is what is happening inside of Us that God is looking at. His spirit now in us is there to lead us into all truth. To set us Free, To confront our hard hearts and to lead us back to Jesus
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
This Process requires obedience, It requires Holiness.
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
Its not doing the right thing that is going to save us. Our salvation is by grace.
I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”
Now God gives us the power to rule over sin in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
We are called to Jesus and He has given us everything we need to live free and full of life. We are to be Holy and give ourselves and our lives to Christ. And Walk in His ways.
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
