Fasting in the early church...
Acts 13:2–3 NLT
2 One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.” 3 So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.
Come to God NOW—not later...
Joel 2:12–13 NLT
12 That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. 13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.
Don’t tear you clothes, but tear you heart
Outer show is not important—Ok, never important...
Matthew 6:16–18 NLT
16 “And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. 18 Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
Fasting is Faith in action to trust God will take care of us and we trust in Him...
Ezra 8:23 NLT
23 So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.
What kind of fast is there for us...
full fast
partial
culture fast, but always with prayer!
Isaiah 58:6–7 NLT
6 “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. 7 Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
Jesus tempted…fasting but not beat down...
Luke 4:1–2 NLT
1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
Luke 4:14–15 NLT
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. 15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
You have a story to be told...
Super Sunday is asking God to do the miraculous, but it is also about you and me being God’s miracles!
Being focused and tuned isn’t enough
God wants us to not just know, but to also walk in it!
Overcome evil with good!
Romans 12:21 NLT
21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.
