Call To Worship

Jeremiah 31:10–11 ESV
10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.’ 11 For the Lord has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.

Introduction

Today We begin our Possibly two week look at Spiritual warfare, But I want to start with a story from C.S. Lewis’ Last Battle to set the scene Tirian the Last king of Narnia and Jewel Unicorn and best friend of the king are resting in a wood.
"I cannot set to any work or sport today, Jewel," said the King. "I can think of nothing but this
wonderful news. "Think you we shall hear of it today?
They are the most wonderful tidings ever heard in our days or our fathers' or our grandfathers' days
Sire," said Jewel, "if they are true."
"How can they choose but be true?" said the King "It is more than a week ago that the first birds came
flying over us saying, Aslan is here, Aslan has come to Narnia again. And after that it
was the squirrels. They had not seen him, but they said it was certain he was in the woods.
Then came the Stag. He said he had seen him with his own eyes, a great way off, by moonlight, in Lantern Waste.
Then came that dark Man with the beard, the merchant from Calormen. The
Calormenes care nothing for Aslan as we do; but the man spoke of it as a thing beyond doubt.
And there was the Badger last night; he too had seen Aslan."
"Indeed, Sire," answered Jewel, "I believe it all.
If I seem not to, it is only that my joy is too great to let my belief settle itself. It is almost too beautiful to believe."
"Yes," said the King with a great sigh, almost a Shiver, of delight. "It is beyond all that I ever hoped for in all my life."
Little did Tirian know that he was both right and wrong at the end was beginning and Aslan was returing to Narnia, the issue was that a False Aslan had also arisen and it brought all the issues with it.
READ: There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel and excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight. - C.S. Lewis Screwtape Letters

The Point

The Point of today’s message is to go into tactics and strategies of the Devil and his ilk more then to do definitions! I want to give you the tools and the playbook and know what to do and what plays are being run against you and your families.
I’m showing you the tools first from scripture so that when the time comes and you run into they whys your prepared. Lord willing next week will talk about some scenarios and definitions.
When dealing with Spiritual evil you will see that these things go hand in hand God does something amazing and then the devil and demons come onto the scene.

Read the text

Mark 9:14–29 ESV
14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

When the Devil attacks

After God has done something amazing

Peter confesses Jesus as Messiah Mark 8:29
Mark 8:29 ESV
29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”
The teaching of Deny Thyself and take up thy cross Mark 8:34-38
The Transfiguration Mark 9:1-13
The Appearing of Moses and Elijah Mark 9:4
The Father speaking call Christ his beloved son Mark 9:7
This Account runs parallel to what Elijah encounters in his ministry
1 Kings 18:36–40 ESV
36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. 37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.
He had just soaked the wood with water (1 Kings 18:33-35)
He had been mocking the Priests of Baal (1 Kings 18:27)
He had been used of God to send rain (1 Kings 18:41-46)
The strategy of Satan and demons is the same counter attack, when you’re over target. You receive the most flack when your over your target. So in the same way Satan will try to thwart victories when you’re having them!
Application:
Obey God even when the going get’s rough. Just like a diet, a work out routine learning something new the difficult doesn’t start until your in it. Push back will happen as part of the Christian faith
Satan always runs the same plays! Why he does so is because people don’t change and he is a perversion of an angel of light, Evil is of death so it can’t do anything new, can’t have life. So when you look at your word

What the attacks look like AKA The Devil Strikes Back

The attack by the unbelievers ( Mark 9:14-16)
The Demon attacking/trying to kill the boy, the disciples, the father, and Jesus (Mark 9:20)
Legion did the same (Mark 5:5)
The Same is true for Elijah
Ahab partners with Jezebel to come after Elijah 1 Kings 19:1
1 Kings 19:1 ESV
1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
2. Jezebel, who I believe is possessed, based on the Spirit of Jezebel that the Bible talks about, Threatens to kill him (1 Kings 19:3
1 Kings 19:3 ESV
3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
The consistency of these attacks is something to behold it even plays out the same in Genesis 2 amd 3
God makes Adam, God Puts Adam in the Garden, he makes it beautiful with trees and stones, provides food, He sees that Adam is alone so He makes every animal, and lastly God creates women and they have the first marriage in the Bible!
Such a huge high point! But then the serpent shows up Gen. 3:1-2
Genesis 3:1–2 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
Adam sees this and does nothing, he assists in the sin 1 Tim. 2:14
1 Timothy 2:14 ESV
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
Romans 5:17 (ESV)
17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man,
Same tactic men and demons attack, in this case the fallen nature of Adam assists in the sin.
This is called typology, tracking of an idea throughout the scripture. You can by knowing the plays know how to defend yourself and go on the offensive.

Application:

The devil will after a spiritual win uses your proclivities to bring you to sin!
Puritan Thomas Brooks in his Book “Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices” says this:

If Peter be slavishly fearful, Satan will put him upon rebuking and denying of Christ, to save his own skin, Mat. 16:22, chap. 26:69–75. If Ahab’s prophets be given to flatter, the devil will straightway become a lying spirit in the mouths of four hundred of them, and they shall flatter Ahab to his ruin, 1 Kings 22. If Judas will be a traitor, Satan will quickly enter into his heart, and make him sell his master for money, which some heathens would never have done, John 13:2. If Ananias will lie for advantage, Satan will fill his heart that he may lie, with a witness, to the Holy Ghost, Acts 5:3. Satan loves to sail with the wind, and to suit men’s temptations to their conditions and inclinations. If they be in prosperity, he will tempt them to deny God, Prov. 30:9; if they be in adversity, he will tempt them to distrust God; if their knowledge be weak, he will tempt them to have low thoughts of God; if their conscience be tender, he will tempt to scrupulosity; if large, to carnal security; if bold-spirited, he will tempt to presumption; if timorous, to desperation; if flexible, to inconstancy; if stiff, to impenitency, &c.

He hath several devices to destroy the great and honourable, the wise and learned, the blind and ignorant, the rich and the poor, the real and the nominal saints.

For Adam Knowledge led to sin, For Elijah it was fear, for the disciples it was conflict! It’s so clear once you see it.

Battle tactics for believers

What God Does

1. God shows his great power

Jesus ends the fight, Mark 9:19
Mark 9:19 ESV
19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.”
b. He free the Boy from the demon, Mark 9:25-27
Mark 9:25–27 ESV
25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
c. God Restores the faith of Elijah (1 Kings 19:11-12
1 Kings 19:11–12 ESV
11 And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.
d. God Punishes the serpent
Genesis 3:14 ESV
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

2. He draws his people to himself

The Disciples after the attack
English Standard Version (Chapter 9)
28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
Jesus took them unto himself and talked with them privately. He gave them himself.
Adam and Eve after the Spiritual attack

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool3 of the day, and the man and his wife bhid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”4

Christ provided them comfort by being with them and dealing with the evil
With Elijah he spoke to him and told him that he is not alone
1 Kings 19:18 ESV
18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha

3. He provides for them

He comforted the Disciples by explaining to them about this demonic encounter
English Standard Version (Chapter 9)
28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
He comforted Adam and Eve by Providing them with clothes to cover up their nakedness.
Genesis 3:21 ESV
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
He Comforted Elijah by giving him Elisha

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha

Application: When Satan attacks comfort yourself with the presence of his word, with his body, that is the church, the saints of God. Don’t try to run and hide like Adam and Eve, run to the assembly of the saints to your church leaders, these are God’s gifts to you!

What you Can do with God’s Aid

He teaches fighting techniques

Mark 9:25 (NKJV)
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!”
Jesus commands by his authority. The word in the Greek is only 10 times in the NT and often to was a order. Think master to underling, or in one case Paul says he has authority to command the freeing of Philemon from Slavery. Jesus commands the crowd to sit before he does a miracle.
His plan is “names it/identifies it, States his authority, Commands it’s removal.
Their is debate as to if you need to do the first part, finding out then name, in my experience that is a not nessacry, but the last two parts are a yes. Why I don’t find out the name because I want as little do do with them as possible!! certain spirtual gifts, in my case the gift of discernment, and life experensce family members invovled with some cultish things growing up. have lead them to being more present then I would care for in my life and circles.
Quick application to dealing with demons in your life and expansion form Puritan writer Matthew Henry:
Luke 10:17–20 ESV
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

. Note, all our victories over Satan are obtained by power derived from Jesus Christ. We must in his name enter the lists with our spiritual enemies, and, whatever advantages we gain, he must have all the praise; if the work be done in his name, the honour is due to his name. 2. They entertain themselves with the comfort of it; they speak of it with an air of exultation: Even the devils, those potent enemies, are subject to us. Note, the saints have no greater joy or satisfaction in any of their triumphs than in those over Satan. If devils are subject to us, what can stand before us?

While it is Good that you cna cast out demons in Jesus’s name you must know that what is more important is that you are a Christian, because Jesus’s name is powerful.

Note, Power to become the children of God is to be valued more than a power to work miracles; for we read of those who did in Christ’s name cast out devils, as Judas did, and yet will be disowned by Christ in the great day.

To prepare for this message I listened to some very conservative Christian podcasts on supernatural experince, and they agree with my own. In Christ’s name you can send away demons, ghosts and any other evil supernatural thing.
One story i heard is that real ghost hunters, not the frauds on TV know when things get bad then can call on Jesus’s name. I can tell you my experiences comport to that story. (Share about ghosts in the back yard)

He Renews Thier Hope The Results

“The Goodness of God makes the devil a polisher, while he intends to be a destroyer. - Puritan Stephen Charnock ( This is a hilarious quote, God uses the schemes of the devil to make His children shine!)
Give hope to the believer and the gospel to the unbeliever.

Benediction

Numbers 6:24–26 ESV
24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
