Day of Epiphany (or days)
SLIDE 2 “MAGI FROM THE EAST”
So many amazing points in this one story
Epiphany - means manifestation of a divine being
SLIDE 3 “EPIPHANY”
But it also means a moment of sudden revelation or insight
SLIDE 4 “JESUS BAPTISM”
Jesus’ baptism is considered an epiphany
SLIDE 5 “WEDDING AT CANA MIRACLE”
Also His first miracle at the wedding, turning the water into wine
Epiphany - manifestation and sudden revelation
SLIDE 6 “MAGI FROM THE EAST”
This goes so well with our new message for the next few weeks
Notice all the stars, we kinda think would be just one
So many amazing points in this story....also 3 prophecies fulfilled
Lets take a look
SLIDE 7
Matthew 2:1–3 NASB95
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2 “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
These Maji were from the East ..... Gentiles
They studied astrology the stars
Herod is troubled
SLIDE 8
Matthew 2:4–6 NASB95
4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; For out of you shall come forth a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’ ”
1 st Prophecy of Micah 5:2.
The significance of Micah’s prophecy......
SLIDE 9
John 7:42 NASB95
42 “Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
Also Isaiah’s prophecy in chapter 11 “A shoot will spring forth from the stem of Jesse”
This event builds from here even more
SLIDE 10
Matthew 2:7–9 NASB95
7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.
Herod calls the Maji because they study this stuff
Herod wants the exact time the star appeared........you already feel what he wants to do right?
He send them to Bethlehem from what the prophecy of Micah says
Verse 7 and verse 9 show us that had appeared.......Jesus birth..... now appears again for them as they go on their after leaving Herod
Which explains the next verse’s impact
SLIDE 11
Matthew 2:10–12 NASB95
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.
Amazing points here.....first they were warned by God in a dream........God will also speak to Joseph also
the significance of the gifts here ........
SLIDE 12
GOLD - Kingship
FRANKINCENSE - Divinity
MYRRH - Burial Perfume
SLIDE 13
Matthew 2:13 NASB95
13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”
SLIDE 14
Matthew 2:14–15 NASB95
14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
Amazing how God outsmarts the devil with the Maji and Joseph.......keep in mind the devil had access to scripture......... but obviously doesn’t understand it as the Spirit reveals it
Another prophecy fulfilled here in verse 15 ....comes from Hosea 11:1.
SLIDE 15
Hosea 11:1 NASB95
1 When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.
SLIDE 16
Matthew 2:16 NASB95
16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.
Ever notice how evil gets in a hurry and over reacts after a good event?
SLIDE 17
Matthew 2:17–18 NASB95
17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; And she refused to be comforted, Because they were no more.”
And again another prophecy fulfilled from Jeremiah 31:15.
SLIDE 18
Matthew 2:19–21 NASB95
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
SLIDE 19
Matthew 2:22–23 NASB95
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, 23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
Again the sovereignty of God through more prophecy fulfilled
SLIDE 20
Judges 13:5 NASB95
5 “For behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”
The Lord wonderfully arranged all this for us today for communion.....you will further understand with these last passages
SLIDE 21
Mark 1:23–24 NASB95
23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
SLIDE 22
John 18:4–5 NASB95
4 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.
WORSHIP TEAM COME UP
SLIDE 23
John 19:18–19 NASB95
18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
so now we see all that God put into this one event to show us and help us in our faith, that He is faithful through His word
