Hear this, O priests!
Give heed, O house of Israel! Hearken, O house of the king!
For the judgment pertains to you;
for you have been a snare at Mizpah,
and a net spread upon Tabor.
And they have made deep the pit of Shittim;
but I will chastise all of them.
Hear this, O priests!
Give heed, O house of Israel! Hearken, O house of the king!
For the judgment pertains to you;
for you have been a snare at Mizpah,
and a net spread upon Tabor.
And they have made deep the pit of Shittim;
but I will chastise all of them.
Verses 1 & 2 begin Chapter 5 with an announcement of judgment which follows Chapter 4 focusing on why the Israelites were deserving of judgment. In Chapter 5, the judgment is more clearly focused, and outlined.
The poetic flow begins with a demand for their attention, to their violations, and the resulting imposed Judgment.
In the first 2 verses of Chapter 5, there are five repetitions of three. The Prophet Hosea begins by demanding the Israelites' attention; "Hear this", Give heed", "Listen". Three specific groups in the Northern Kingdom noted; “Priests”, “House of Israel” and “House of the King”. This same pattern of three also repeats with Hosea stating why judgment is applying to them; "you have been a snare", "and a net", "dug a deep pit". And three associated locations; Mizpah, Tabor, and Shittim (LEB BIBLE), respectively.
Emphasis on who receives the judgment. The three groups of Israelites are identified followed by several pronouns, you, they, and them, followed by an all inclusive summary, “a punishment for all”.
Questions: Where are Mizpah, Tabor, and Shittim located and what is their significance?
