Why is identity important?
Feel lost/empty without it. Everyone wants to know who they are
Example of athlete who gets hurt
Other side is How others view you? How do family, friends, and strangers view you?
What are some things that come to mind when you think of identity
Christ, sports, smarts, past experiences, class clown, etc.
What does bible say about identity?
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”
Identity should always be rooted in Christ
Identity should be in Christ but sometimes we identity more with worldly things which can lead to brokeness
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.
Instead, the mindset should be: “my identity is in Christ But I also play sports.” This way even when those things are taken away we still have our identity.
That’s what we want, is a firm and unwavering foundation on Christ. We want our identity to be set in stone on Christ.
If you are struggling to put your identity in Christ or know someone who is, next week we are going to dive into what an identity in Christ looks like and how you can get that identity.
