Spirit-filled prayer

A.W. Tozer To desire revival and at the same time to neglect prayer and devotion is to wish one way and walk another.
You cannot be a Christian and neglect prayer, but there are different types of prayers we can come into. This morning we are going to talk about the Spirit filled prayer.
Praying in Tongues
Isaiah prophesied the coming of the Spirit and the power he gives us.
Isaiah 28:11 ESV
11 For by people of strange lips and with a foreign tongue the Lord will speak to this people,
Isaiah is prophesying about tongues and interpretations.
1 Corinthians 14:27 ESV
27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.
When God desires to talk to his people he can use tongues and interpretation to do so. The question is why doesn’t the person just prophesy— the answer is because sometimes people will write off the prophesy as just someone talking. Signs and wonder follow the Holy Spirit and this is just one of signs he uses.
The second way God uses tongues is tongues in a known language, but unknown to the person who is speaking it.
Acts 2:6 ESV
6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
We don’t see this one much any more because there are saved people in just about every language, but I have heard modern testimonies where a Pastor was told to speak in tongues by the Spirit and as he did someone in the congregation understood what he was saying and Got saved because of this miracle.
The third Spiritual prayer is the counterfeit.
Satan will use people to mock or to mimic God’s children and these people use a language in the spiritual realm—not of the Holy Spirt to cause confusion or disruption.
The third one is the one I want to focus on. It’s our personal prayer life.
Speaking in tongues as a prayer language is speaking the supernatural in your life.
1 Corinthians 14:2 ESV
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
If you further down the chapter we can see that we can also praise in this same language.
1 Corinthians 14:15 (ESV)
15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.
There are 4 main reasons I believe speakig in tongues is important, but first we need to understand that speaking in tongues isn’t salvation. You can be saved and not speak in tongues, but you are working in and praying in your own knowledge and power.
You can move a car with or without an engine. An engine isn’t the only way ot get a car to move forward, but it is the easiest.
There are many who believe these gifts aren’t for today, but I can’t find any biblical premesis for this. When Jesus came to fulfill the law, putting an end to sacrifices and speration he showed us that there is a clear end to this. This end isn’t hidden in the word and it’s not found by twisting scripture into what we desire it say, but it’s a very clear end. This leads me to believe that if the gifts were to end there would be a very clear written ending. A showing of it’s completion and it’s fulfillment.
So here are the four benefits of speaking in Tongues.
Speaking directly to God
1 Corinthians 14:2 ESV
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
This is God in us speaking to God on our behalf about things we know nothing about. When we pray in our natural mind how can we open doors and release powers that we don’t even have knowledge of .
Philippians 4:19 ESV
19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
If we don’t know how to access these riches or where these riches come from how can we speak them into existence. How can we ask God to provide them. The Spirit of God knowns what’s written in the Lamb’s book so that he can speak our destiny and open up the gates of blessing.
2. Insight into mysteries
1 Corinthians 14:2 ESV
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
The Spirit is using us to unveil the mysteries on Earth. We can’t find or access these mysteries unless they are first spoken.
3. Build yourself up
1 Corinthians 14:4 ESV
4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
Both of these things need to happen, but we as Christians tend to neglect ourselves because we are doing the work of God. But there are times where we need to built up by God so that we can do his work.
Jude 20–21 ESV
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
it builds us up, but in our building we are able to keep ourselves in the love of God. Which will help us to wait for eternal life. If you show me a burnt out warn out Christian I will show you a Christian who more than likely neglected building themselves us in the Spiritual and the natural.
4. Overcomes Weakness
Romans 8:26–27 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
