Lesson 14 Text: John 10 Doctrine: Eternal Security
Welcome back! It is so good to see all of your faces.
Can we start 2024 doing something different?…can we read Psalm 23 today, together,
it’s in your slack channel:
Psalm 23 (ESV)
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
I love that this weeks scripture means that we have a shepherd we can rely on.
Each of you in this room is a shepherd to someone in our class- women and children get to see the good shepherd modeled through you as you pour into them- giving up your time to shepherd them to the true and good shepherd.
This week and next we have the opportunity for new women and children to join our class as we welcome them to the mini study. We also have a new classroom opening and new women and children starting BSF for the first time tomorrow.
May we embrace the opportunity to welcome them into the fold, some of them, maybe for the first time…May they come to know the good shepherd and follow him…may they learn to hear his voice as they open up his words and read them….and may God continue to use each of you to shepherd his flock….
Introduction:
Our doctrine this week is eternal security….
Several years ago, my Aunt and Uncle went out to dinner, properly activating their home security system before leaving.
While at dinner, they received an alert that the alarm was going off.
They rushed home to find the police at their house, a smashed window and missing possessions.
While yes they lost some possessions, what they really lost that night was their sense of security.
Our culture goes to great lengths in search of security.
We look for it in our homes, relationships, money, jobs, etc.
Things we think are secure, all have the possibility to be taken away at any moment.
Secure relationships become lost, money you thought would bail you out- gone in an instant, and home security systems providing nothing but an alarm reminding you that your sense of security is gone.
But, there is one thing that we can put our full trust in and that is the eternal security believers have through Jesus.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd who gives his sheep eternal security in God the Father’s hand.
Salvation is a one-time event that is protected in Jesus’ work on the cross and those that are saved can rest assured that they are secure in Him.
Verses 28 and 29 remind us that Jesus’ sheep will have eternal life, they will never perish and no one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.
This is not a false sense of security like we find in this world- in Jesus, we have true and lasting security.
In the Father you are safe. You are protected.
A dictionary search of the word, “Security” defines it as a: freedom from danger, a freedom from fear or anxiety, and a freedom from the prospect of being laid off. Did you catch the repeated phrase in the definition...freedom from…
This means that we have freedom from the danger of eternal punishment for our sin.
We have freedom from fear or anxiety that we will lose our salvation, because in Christ, we are secure, we are protected- we are free.
We can rest assured that our salvation is secure, even when nothing in this life is certain.
Life with the shepherd, is a life of freedom…
As a believer in Christ, Jesus promises that you will know his voice when he calls.
And because we know his voice and are eternally secure, we can step out in faith into this world without fear of being led astray.
When I believe in eternal security my service to God comes from a place of love rather than from a place of longing for acceptance.
We serve not because of what we will get in return, but because of what we have been given already.
The truth of eternal security gives believers hope for today and helps us long for eternity in Jesus’s presence. – No temptation, struggle, or enemy can take away what Christ has granted to His children!
Jesus reminds us that there are false shepherds and wolves looking to attack his flock.
But, sheep will only follow the voice of the shepherd… .
How does your life reflect you know and follow the Good Shepherd’s voice? Do you live knowing you are secure- or are you searching for security in things of this world?
Who in your life needs to know of the eternal security they can have through faith in Jesus?
