Series through the Psalms of Ascent
Solace, Hope/ecouragement, Instruction
Psalm 130 is…
very clear
very powerful
How are we attacking this morning…
We are going to work straight through it.
I dont feel the need to get fancy… just keep it simple
You me, us, and the Word of God.
Background:
Written by (King David).
It may be applied to any person in distress, outward or inward; applying to God for help and deliverance, for pardoning grace and mercy; encouraging himself and others to hope for it.
4 stanzas
they build on one another
provide a process that anyone can follow in search of deliverance.
both eternal state, and on this side of heaven.
the process of salvation is all up The up in this psalm

Stanza 1 Cry out the Lord answers.

Psalm 130:1 ESV
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
Depths =
The Pit, The Desert.
The Depths of human sufferings.
A place you cannot get yourself out of.
cry =
1. I Yell (The picture of Graham)
2. I have no other option
3. I need your help
Lord:
Governance (kingdom language)
even David submits to God as Lord
Submitted myself to your leading.
You have the keys of my life.
you are crying for a specific persons help who you know can provide deliverance.
This title is used specifically throughout the rest of the Psalm.
Transition: This is the position we find ourselves in. you do not possess the ability to save yourself. your only option is to cry out to God… here is the beaty… the promise of scripture is that he hears.
Psalm 130:2 ESV
O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!
Hear:
My cry, my voice
attentive
1 John 5:14 ESV
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
Mercy = compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.
God has the ability to deliver you.
God has the ability to deliver you from even your own mistakes.
Mercy is offered when we call upon the Lord.
transition: we friends have incredible access to the God of the universe. as the palmist continues he dives into our greatest need for rescuing.

Stanza 2: Seek forgiveness the Lord offers it

Psalm 130:3 ESV
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
Who Can Stand?
Mark Iniquities = Moral wrongdoing?
To the psalmist no one can stand.
Jesus can stand.. the Author of this psalm doesn’t even know that!
Jesus lives a sinless life. There are no marks against him.
Psalm 130:4 ESV
But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.
What is God offering?
God offers forgiveness… What do you need forgiven from (getting yourself in the pit)
Fearing God= Proper understanding of who God is.
When we put god where he belongs and where we belong there is a healthy fear.
The friend who is your friend but yet you dont want to mess with him.
Recap!
transition: these last two stanzas turn to action one personal, and one corporate.

Stanza 3: Wait on the Lord he will deliver you.

Psalm 130:5 ESV
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;
I will wait: Putting yourself in the position of Trusting God to deliver.
Im done trying to dig myself out of this pit.
My soul: Spiritual waiting. (The Real you)
This is more than physical waiting.
this is more than physical deliverance.
Psalm 130:6 ESV
my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
Watchman: a look out. who is coming until the sunrise.
What does your life look like if defined by waiting on the Lord?
do you wait on God like a watchman?

Stanza 4: Wait on the Lord Church he will deliver us.

Psalm 130:7 ESV
O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.
Church we have no hope apart from Christ.
We wait together.
Steadfast Love
Plentiful redemption
Psalm 130:8 ESV
And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
redemption from our iniquities is offered in the Lord
Pray:
Cry Out
Seek forgivn
