The Promise of the Spirit
25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.
29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.
30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
Intro: This section of John Jesus continues to prepare His disciples for His departure.
He had ate with them.
He had washed their feet.
He told them to not let their hearts be troubled.
He had to them that He was the way, the truth and the life
He told them what they would go through.
It would be the most difficult thing they gone through. But with Jesus leaving the spirit of God would dwell in them.
After the resurrection just before He would ascend into heaven, He would tell them to go to the world and preach the gospel. But He would also tell them to wait, and Jesus would tell them to wait. Act 4
For believers today we receive the power of the Holy Spirit as soon as we ask Jesus to save us. The same Holy Spirit Jesus spoke of to His disciples.
Prayer. It is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit that speaks to us.
It is this spirit that answers when we ask.
It is this spirit that shows when we seek.
It is this spirit that opens the door when we knock.
I. The teaching of the Spirit. VS 25-26

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.
These things
When His says these things, since the time that He had been with them.
1. He had revealed some great things to them. Parables, great stories, prayer, servants, giving, love, humble, He talked about His death and his return.
a. But from the questions they had asked. (VS 5;8;22) It seems they grasped very little.
b. At this time the Holy Spirit had not come to them yet so they didn’t understand, but Jesus had told them to have faith and trust him.
c. He would send them the help to understand and remember.

Helper (Comforter) Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit. The third person in the trinity.
1. The Holy Spirit “HE” will teach you:
a. The father sent the Son, the Son would go back to the father, and the father would send the Holy Spirit. He would come in His place.
b. He would indwell them, He would direct them, comfort them, and assure them. The Holy Spirit would do all the things that Jesus did for them.
c. This promise is for all followers of Jesus.
VS 26b “He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
2. They didn’t write the things down that Jesus taught them. He didn’t keep a journal of all the miracles he performed.
a. The Holy Spirit would work in the minds reminding them of all His teachings, reminding them of the miracles he performed.
b. Not only bring the things that He has taught them back to their minds, but also giving them an insight to the meaning of what He had taught them.
c. They needed this from the Holy Spirit to have the power to preach the gospel.
Peter would preach and 5000 people would be saved.
d. We have that same Holy Spirit in us, that is how we are able to share the gospel.
3. This men would write God’s wrote. Matthew, John. (They were with Jesus) Mark and Luke.
a. The gospels of Jesus are accurate. We have the word of God, N.T and O.T all because the Holy Spirit revealed the truth to them.
b. The Holy Spirit revealed the truth to them and will do the same for us. I Corn 2:10-14
c. as we read and study God’s word and have it in our hearts the Holy Spirit will remind us of scripture.
d. When we are witnessing; Teaching; You may be trying to encourage someone.

VS 27
27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Peace: Greek. Freedom from worry.
My peace I leave with you
This peace is ours as the result of the salvation we receive when we are saved.
a. We enjoy this peace through indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
b. Jesus promised His disciples personal peace, His own peace. He says “My peace” the peace that He promised His disciples was the peace that filled His own heart here on earth.
c. Look again what He says “My peace I give you. We don't receive this peace because we desire it. We don't receive this peace because we earn it.
d. Jesus gives us this peace to every believer. Elab
Not as the world giveth:
1. The world talks a lot about peace. We have peace programs, peace societies, peace summits, we hear about world peace. Keeping the peace.
a. VS 1 Jesus said, “let not your heart be troubled” Hear He adds “Neither be afraid”
b. The disciples should have been comforted, assured, strengthened, and encouraged. But not long after Peter would denies that He even know Jesus and the others would forsake him.
c. The peace of God is amazing. It removes all fear, doubt, worry.
The Spirit of rejoicing. VS 28-31
VS 28
28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.
1. Jesus had told them (John 13, 14) that He was going to leave and come again.
a. If you loved me: Meaning if you want whats best for me. (Elab a loved one that is ready to die)
b. It was time for Jesus to go back to His father. He wanted to go back to His father. He was God in the flesh. He was ready to leave this world, He was ready for the cross and cry out “It is finished”
c. He did want them to be troubled, He wanted them to rejoice.
VS 29
29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.
Fulfilled prophecy is a great comfort and support to believers. (Isa 46:8-10)
b. When the suffering and death of Jesus came to pass it would shake the faith of the disciples. This was their leader, they had seen him stand up to the religious leaders. They had seen him perform miracles and then he died. Elab on the way He died.
c. But after the initial shock, because Jesus had prepared them, it would greatly help.

VS 30
30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.
30 I will not talk with you much more, for the prince (evil genius, ruler) of the world is coming. And he has no claim on Me. [He has nothing in common with Me; there is nothing in Me that belongs to him, and he has no power over Me.]
1. Jesus knew He only had a short time before the crucifixion. His time with His friends was soon be over.
The ruler (prince KJV) of the world cometh: Ge
a. Satan was about to begin his final assault on Jesus.
And he has nothing in me:
b. He had tempted Jesus for 40 days after he was baptized. Elab
c. Jesus did not fear Satan because he had no hold on him. He knew no sin. James 1:13-14
d. Satan can and will temp us, but since we have the power of the Holy Spirit in us, through that power we can overcome any temptation he throws at us. And that is something to rejoice about
VS 31
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
Jesus loves the father, He did exactly what the father commanded Him to do. (Jn 12:49-50)
His obedience to the father included being Obedient unto death” (Phil 2:8) His was obedient and no matter what it cost Him.
His obedience to the father was because of His love. His death on the cross for our sins is because of His love.
Anyone that receives His love (Elab) will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion: We use the term “to have Jesus in our hearts” we do trough the Holy Spirit. Elab on what the Holy Spirit does for you. If you don't have this. The Holy Spirit is speaking to you: Elab
