I want to set up the scene...
John 14:15–31
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise let us go from here.

1 Thing first, you need to know that according to to the 15th verse there is one condition, and Jesus tells us plainly:
John 14:15–16 ““If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,”
When Jesus tell us, i’ll ask the Father and He will send another Helper, I want us to focus in on the word “another Helper” The greek word (Allos) = “A second one, of the same kind,” and “pursuant to the same design”
One thing you have to know about The Holy Spirit is that He’s not an “it”, He is a person
So what does the Holy Spirit do for us?
Verse 26 Tells us: He will teach you all things
He will bring to remembrance of all Jesus said
He is with us FOREVER!
John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,”
Did you notice in verse 16 that His presence inside us is promised for “forever” Hallelujah, all our life and the one to come ,He will be with us forever!
There are other things that the Holy Spirit does:
He indwells us at the moment of salvation
Romans 8:11 “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit at the time of our salvation but we are filled by Him when we submit to Him.
The MacArthur Bible Commentary says, “Being filled with the Spirit is living in the conscious presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, letting His mind, through the Word, dominate everything that is thought and done.”
2. He convicts us of sin
John 16:8 “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:”
3. He will guide into all truth
John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
Isaiah 30:21 “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”
4. He searches for the deep things of God
1 Corinthians 2:10 “these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”
5. He produces fruit in us
Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”
6. He equips us with spiritual gifts
1 Corinthians 12:8–11 “For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”
7. He empowers us
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
Just look at the complete difference in the disciples after the Holy Spirit came upon them in upper room on the day of Pentecost
Acts 5:13–16 “None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.”
This same ultimate power Holy Spirit is in you!
8. He continually fills us
Ephesians 5:18–21 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
My sweet Lord, this is the winning formula!
Be filled with the Holy Spirit + Singing and worship to the Lord + Giving thanks + submitting to one another = Christian success!
Be being filled with the Holy Spirit is done by yielding to him everyday
A word of warning and please pay attention. We can however quench The Holy Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Do not quench the Spirit.”
We can certainly quench the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19), and sin can hinder the filling of the Spirit, affecting our fruitfulness for God.
Sin is the culprit!
If there is sin the life of a believer, the Holy Spirit will certainly be hindered
We can also grieve the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
This happens when our actions and words displease God
The filling of the Holy Spirit, then, can vary in the life of each believer. Negatively, a believer in Christ can "quench" or "grieve" the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19; Ephesians 4:30). Sinful actions can hinder the work of God's Spirit in his or her life. In contrast, when a believer in Christ lives in obedience to God's will and commands, he or she should expect to see God's Spirit living through them.
The answer to this as believers in Christ, is obedience to God and to His written Word. This is a daily submission as we walk with the Lord in progressive sanctification, yielding to the Holy Spirit in being filled for His glory and being empowered for proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
