Hell and it’s 3 Part’s
SHEOL is the first old testament Hebrew word
SHEOL
Which was the general Word that was used throughout the Old Testament
To refer to the basic general place
We’re both the righteous and the unrighteous went
So because of that, it is better translated as the
The Grave —— SHEOL
Rather than HELL because both the righteous and the unrighteous went there
Matter of fact, we can see this because king David
Was a righteous man and seen himself going to this place called
SHEOL or The Grave
And he trusted that God will not abandon his soul there
To this place called SHEOL
Psalm 16:10 (NKJV)
10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
Because the old testament does not go into a lot of detail
On the subject of hell
And their understanding of hell
Was not that involve or develop at this time
So now we need to move forward to the New Testament
Because Jesus and the New Testament and the New Testament writers
Gives us a whole lot more detail on this subject of hell
So the New Testament Greek counterpart
To the old testament word SHEOL
Is the Greek word HADES
This is translate several times in the New Testament as hell
Luke Chapter 16 Will give us a little more detail about this subject of hell
Because there’s three different compartments to HELL
And I personally don’t believe that this is a parable in Luke 16
And many theologians as well don’t believe it is a parable
Because Jesus did not use proper names in parables
As you will see in this story there is a man named Lazarus
Luke 16:19 (NKJV)
19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.
Now the next word introduces a contrast
Luke 16:20 (NKJV)
20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,
So now you have to pay close attention to the contrast
Jesus is setting up in the story
You have a rich man
Then you have a beggar
And you also have a gate that is separating this bagger from this rich man
So no matter how much the beggar wants to crossover
Into this rich man’s home he is separated by a gate
And that’s going to come up later so we have to pay close attention
Luke 16:21 (NKJV)
21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
So this is also an analogy or comparison that Jesus is setting up here
This poor man just simply wanted to have some Crumbs
That fell from this rich man’s table
He wasn’t asking for the whole dinner he was just asking for a little bit
Luke 16:22–23 (NKJV)
22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
1st HADES
So now there’s several things we can learn here about HADES
Number one, one of the compartments of HADES
Is this place call Torments
This is where this rich man went
He didn’t go there because he was rich
He went there because he was evil
So several things we see in this story
1st It’s a Place of Torments [ PAIN ]
Later on in the story we’re going to see that he was in pain
He was in fire
2nd It’s a Place of Memories
Later on we will see that this man has a memory
Of his life on earth
A memory of his other brothers who was alive
3rd It’s a Place of Separation
Most importantly, a place of separation from God
And also separation from loved ones that will eventually go to heaven
Luke 16:24 (NKJV)
24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
Now what’s happening here
He’s trying to appeal to his Jewish Lineage
And says “ hey Abraham, you’re a Jew, I’m a Jew
Can you possibly get me out of this place “
Luke 16:24 (NKJV)
24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
Now notice this
Whenever they was on earth
It was the beggar, who wanted simply just a small few crumbs
off this rich man table but was not able to get it
And now, this rich man just simply wants a few drops of water
From Lazarus because he is suffering in agony
Notice
Luke 16:24–25 (NKJV)
24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
So we see here that he does have the activity of his mind
In hell
Luke 16:25–26 (NKJV)
25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
Look what’s happening here
You have to see it
On earth what was separating this beggar from this rich man home
There was a gate
No matter how much he wanted to get over
He could not
Now Jesus picks up on that story
And now in the same way there is a gulf
And it is fixed between the torments in HADES
And this place is called Paradise
Which is the place where the old testament believers
Went and was comforted
So now we need to slow down and take a pause
Because there is something very important that happens next in this story
And this is what theologians call the victorious proclamation
Essentially and because believers was filled and contaminated with sin
They was not qualified to go directly into the presence of God
In the old testament
Because payment for their sin have not yet been paid for
Until the coming of Jesus Christ
And His sacrifice on the cross
So they was not Tormented in Hades
But they was comforted in this place called Paradise
Which is the reason why when Jesus was on the cross
He didn’t say to the man that repented of his sins would go directly to heaven
But today you will be with me in paradise
Because Jesus has not yet provided payment for the sins of mankind
But in 1st Peter 3
Peter gives us some insight into what Jesus did
After he died on the cross
1 Peter 3:18–19 (NKJV)
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,
So what many theologians believe is that
What happened at the cross
Jesus provide payment for 0ur sins with his blood
To the father
Now allowing these old testament saints
To now be transferred into the presence of God
Because now, when God looks at them
He does not see their sin but he sees the righteousness of Jesus Christ
The blood of Jesus Christ that covers a multitude of sin
So basically, it is believed by theologians
That this, place called Paradise
Was once full of Old Testament believers
Is now empty, and all of these believers
Is now in the presence of God
Which is the reason why the apostle Paul
2 Corinthians 5:8 (CSB)
8 In fact, we are confident, and we would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Philippians 1:21 (NIV)
21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Philippians 1:23 (NIV)
23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
So the understanding now that whenever we die
We don’t go to this place called Paradise
But we go directly into the presence of God
Now you maybe wondering about that last little phrase
Where it says that “ Jesus preached to the spirits that are in prison “
This brings us to the next compartment of hell
Another Greek word used in the New Testament only once
And that is the word TARTARUS
2nd TATARUS
Apparently, there was a group of Angels that had sinned against God
In such a way that God said, I am not going to allow you to be a demon
That joins Satan and his demonic influence
I’m going to keep you in this place, in chains
Reserve for judgment
2nd Peter 2:4
In our English version It just says hell
But the Greek word behind it lets us know
That this is a different compartment of hell
Called TARTARUS
2 Peter 2:4 (NIV)
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
Jude 6 (NIV)
6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.
Now apparently the Demons was aware that there was another place
Where some of their other demonic friends
Was being held in chains awaiting judgment
Luke 8:30–31 (NIV)
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him.
31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
So, even these demons knew that there was a place
That they did not even want to go
And this was the abyss
Which many scholars believe that this is the same place called TARTARUS
So right now all the people that are unrighteous and did not believe in Christ
Are in these place called Hades
Specifically this place called Torments receiving punishment for their sins
I want you to think of Torments or Hades
As a temporary place where people are awaiting their final sentence
Or their final judgment
Think of it more as the county jail
Rather than prison which is going to be
Where they ultimately going to live out their final sentence
But before someone gets sentence, they have to be judged
This leads to the second judgment, which is called
The Great White Throne Judgment
Revelation 20:13–15 (NIV)
13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.
14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
So this lets us know that there are certain punishments in hell
And all punishments are not going to be the same
Because it was saying that they was Judge according to their works
So this leads us to the third compartment of hell
3rd [ The Lake Of Fire ]-- GEHENNA
Now currently this place is now empty
Because the great white throne judgment has not taken place
So this is a place that has been reserved
For the devil and his angels and his followers
Now the question becomes, why is it called GEHENNA
Just outside of Jerusalem there is a little Valley call the valley of Hinnom
This is what most theologians believe
That Jesus used to get this word GEHENNA
Essentially, this was a valley outside of Jerusalem
Where sacrifices was made
All of the trash was dumb
And times dead bodies was dumb
Sacrifices was made by way of fire
And that was believe that there was a fire
That was continuously burning in this trash dump
Just outside of Jerusalem
So if you think about this now
The New Testament describe heaven as the new Jerusalem
And it is said that people that do not believe in Christ
They will be cast out where they would be weeping and gnashing of teeth
Jesus, knowing that his listeners understood exactly about this place
The valley of Hinnom was all about
And know that no one wanted to end up there
Jesus is saying that Hell is going to be the same way
Going to be a place of fire
It’s going to be a place of torment
Where even the worm will not die
The 3 Parts
1st Place called Torments
2nd Place called Tartarus
3rd Place called The Lake of Fire
