It had been almost 2000 years since God blessed Abraham (Genesis 12)… “I will bless you and make you a great nation… and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
It has been almost 1500 years since God promised David (2 Samuel 7:16)… “I will establish your throne forever”
It has been almost 400 years since Malachi declared that there would be “a messenger and he will clear the way before me… and the Messenger of the Covenant (Abraham) … He is coming!”
Waiting… wanting… HOPING… one day the Promised Messiah would come…
HOPE
HOPE
Proverbs 13:12 states that, “Hope deferred makes the hearts sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”
We have been looking at the scarlet thread traced through the OT Scriptures
In the Gospels we see this HOPE Fulfilled in Jesus Christ!
Engaging through Acts & Epistles we will see how we are to REFLECT and GIVE this HOPE to the world around us (it is a gift)
In Revelation HOPE is seen fully and completely as Jesus Christ is fully made known and returns again!
Our study through the Old Testament had us looking to Hope… now as we go through the New Testament (New Covenant) we see HOPE in Jesus Christ and it is beautiful how our scriptures have laid out the structure of the New Testament…
NT Overview
NT Overview
We begin by looking at the historical books....FOUNDATIONS… Gospels & Acts
This allows for us similar to the OT to grasp historically what is occuring
The books are NOT listed in order of when written necessarily
While the gospels (good news) will take us through the life and acts of Christ at His first advent we are given a clear picture of God in the flesh doing His redemptive work for mankind
The four gospels give us this picture in stereo with unique emphasis from each writer
Not a lot is recorded considering… Jesus was about 33
All and all about 50 days are recorded
Greatest emphasis is given to His last week on earth
Matthew was written later on 50AD - 65AD
This was an oral message carried by the Apostles and new converts
As the message spread and the church grew the need for the written word grew
God inspired various ones to write down His Word for us
Acts will take us through the birth and growth of the church greatly through the life and eyes of Paul and Luke
At the center of the New Testament is more PERSONAL in approach and more PRACTICAL in application.
These are Epistles or Letters written to individuals and to churches throughout the world of that time
The first group is written by Paul
The second group is written by various ones (interesting that Hebrews connects these two groups… Author is unknown)
The New Testament has various prophecy intertwined in it but the lions share is in Revelation (singular) introducing and fully making Known The Lion of Judah Jesus Christ the King!!!
Now… although it was most likely written second, we begin the gospels with Matthew… an amazing and crystal clear transition from the Old Testament prophecy into the New Testament fulfillment!!!
Matthew Overview
Matthew Overview
Matthew is one of two Gospel writers who were also one of Christ disciples. He was a TAX COLLECTOR!!! According to the Jews the worst one could be, collecting taxes for a gentile Emperor. It is this man God uses to write this gospel.
We see Matthew emphasize how sinners and the outcast are drawn to Christ, welcomed and forgiven.
There is a clear picture and connection to the Law… yet it is fulfilled in Christ Matthew 5:17-18
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Moses gave God’s Law to the people but now One greater than Moses was in their midst… God with them!
Matthews whole purpose in writing is to present:
Jesus Christ as the Anointed One (KING OF THE JEWS) the long awaited promised Messiah.
Jesus is the very CLIMAX of the prophets teachings!!!
Matthew approaches the narrative of this message from a VERY JEWISH perspective…
Jewish Perspective:
Jewish Perspective:
The genealogy at the beginning makes emphasis that Jesus comes from Abraham (BLESSING!!!)
Shows clearly He is from the Davidic Kingly line (heir to the throne)
Demonstrates how Joseph (stepfather) and Mary (mother) are David’s decedents…
Now Emmanuel… “God with us!”… and God brought BLESSING!!!
Matthew takes great care to demonstrate how Jesus is the Messiah… prophecy fulfilled
130 quotes from OT prophets!
“in order to fulfill” phrase is used throughout!
Where the OT leaves off looking… Mathew comes declaring it is Him!
Matthew bridges the two testaments beautifully and powerfully
Jesus is their long awaited King!!! and Jesus came presenting Himself as the King with the Kingdom at hand!
The Kingdom
The Kingdom
John the baptist is clearing the way!
Jesus is baptized at the beginning of His ministry and then tempted in the wilderness after 40 days
So many ties and pictures of where man and Israel had failed we see Christ victorious!
Each time Jesus goes to the power of the SCRIPTURES!!!
Jesus calls His disciples (Matthew being one of twelve) as He begins His three year ministry and equipping of His disciples
As King offering the kingdom Jesus declares in powerful form the Sermon on the Mount...
Jesus sets forth a standard that had people amazed
Jesus taught with authority unlike the teachers of their day.
The kingdom living is flipped from the mindset and culture of their day and ours:
The first are last and last first
those who serve are greatest
Those who give everything are the richest
love your enemies...
God with us sets forth His standard for us to live by
We see His POWER as our king observing a series of 10 MIRACLES
His authority and power over:
Sickness
Demons
Nature
Disease
And even death!!!
We see over and over that faith is seen in those that Christ does a work in
There is a slow turning away by the crowds and people as Jesus speaks and works. Their opinion of who they think the king should be blinds them to who the King is right before them and they reject Him… [pyramid peaks1]
The prophets declare a Messiah, He must suffer, and bring in His Kingdom (Isaiah 53)
Their idea of suffering was compared to the state under Rome
They did not comprehend One like Jesus
They wanted a soldier, a warrior who would free them from Rome
Not a Savior who would free them from Sin
As they reject their King… Christ reveals His plans for His Bride the Church [pyramid peaks2]
The kingdom would come later…
Jesus would turn His attention to investing in His disciples those who follow Him
Jesus would use PARABLES as He taught them
He would spend alone time, drawing away from the crowds
He asked them at one pointedly who He was: Matthew 16:13-18
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Jesus would address those rejecting Him and His followers declaring His death and when He would once again return to rule on His throne!
A great deal of Christ teaching of His second coming is found in Matthew
His scoffers would cry out for a sign and the only sign they would receive is the sign of Jonah… three days in the belly of the fish
He challenges His followers to have an eternal perspective, a kingdom focus, to follow Him...
Ultimately:
Ultimately:
The sanhedrin declare you are not the messiah… and the people reject their king
The kingdom of this world and Heaven collide and clash
The true King comes on a donkey
Cleanses the temple
Weeps over the people and how they missed His coming
YET… lovingly, with GRACE and MERCY offers Himself for them
Pilate finds no fault yet sends him to be crucified…THE KING IS MOCKED Matthew 27:29-30; 35-37
And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
Their King hung on the cross dying for them, for you, and for me… the Son of God, the Lamb of God as John the Baptist would cry out… whose death paid for the sin of the world…
Their King would die, be buried, and three days later… “as He said!!!” would rise from the dead
The King would conquer sin and death, once, for ALL
Jesus teaching, the prophets messages all authenticated by this powerful act!
Matthew concludes his gospel with the Risen King’s “Great Commission”…
Commission: one of authority or rank giving a command to do certain acts or duties!
Matthew has described and presented in great detail the Jesus Christ is the King of kings, Lord of lords… and now risen with power and authority gives His followers this commission… IT IS NOT THE GREAT CONCEPT rather COMMISSION (Matthew 28:18-20)
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
OUR KING!
OUR KING!
Wow… the One Matthew introduces as King… God with us… continues to be with us as we go!
Matthew may have presented The King from a Jewish perspective and to a Jewish audience but mark my words… the message was for ALL people, the world
The king’s life is marked by God’s love and desire for all:
The gentile women in His genealogy
The Gentile kings who worship Him at His birth
The “field mentioned in 13:38 is the world
And in closing His directive to “all nations”
Is He your King? If so which kingdom do you represent in your life, words, and actions? If He is our King then it’s time we begin to follow Him!
