Faith of the Ancients: Noah
Faith of the Ancients: Noah
Genesis 12:1–3 (NASB95)
Now the Lord said to Abram,
“Go forth from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
Abel
Though he is dead, his blood still speaks
main Idea: your life speaks
What does your life say to God?
By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did
What does God say about your life?
By Faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings
What does your life say to others?
By Faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead
Enoch
Main idea: faith in action: walk, believe, seek
Walking faith
continuous movement
Believing faith
better understanding of belief is trust
trust leads to faith, which is our belief in actions
Seeking Faith
diligently, sincerely, earnestly seek
crave
God Rewards those who seek him
God is real and relevant, he isn’t just someone or something. God is everything
Read: Hebrews 11:1-2
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
For by it the men of old gained approval.
By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Intro: What did Noah do for a job? He was an arkitecht
What kind of lighting did Noah use for the ark? Floodlights
Where did Noah keep the bees? The ark hives
Why was good at finance? He kept his stock afloat while the world was in liquidation
Did you know that not all the animals came in pairs? The worms came in apples
Noah’s story is more than just a story of faith and promises, it is also a story of judgement
Main idea: We have been warned. Trust - truth that shapes behavior.

Noah was only 10 generations away from Adam
population at the time of Noah- answers say anywhere between 1m people to 10billion
we just don’t know how many kids they had
population was higher because of the longer life span
8 to 9 generations living at the same time
Adam probably only dies 50 to 60 years before Noah’s birth

great grandson of Enoch
a. Noah stands out
i. Genesis 6:5-9
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
The Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.
ii. But Noah - be the exception
Christians should stand out
values shaped by God, not culture
iii. Blameless, righteous, and faithful
blameless points to our relationships with others
God cares about what other people see in you
Our faith is not permission to be judgmental and stuck up
Righteous is how God sees us
Faithful means our faith is an every day event, not a one time event
walking with God/in the spirit
There is a contrast between us and the world
Stars- camping
b. Philippians 2:15 shine like stars
so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,
god calls us to be the light in the darkness
Do all things without grumbling or disputing;
c. Matthew 7:13-14 be the few
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.
“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
being a know it all in school- calculus, pride
2. Be a "Do-it-all" (not a know-it-all)
2. Be a "Do-it-all" (not a know-it-all)
a. Noah obeyed (holy fear)
i. Genesis 6:22, 7:5
Genesis 6:22 (NASB95)
Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.
Genesis 7:5 (NASB95)
Noah did according to all that the Lord had commanded him.
ii. Built an ark
heb 11:7 noah did it in holy fear
it had never been rain or even flooded
concept of a boat may have not even been a concept yet
iii. Got on the ark with the animals
b. Obeying is not always fun or easy
i. Perseverance
70-100 years to build,
one year and 10 days on the ark (covid)
alot of poop and shoveling on the ark
ii. Philippians 2:5-8 obedient to death
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
some people are only obedient to convenience
disobedience brings consequences
sometimes we just obey to avoid consequences
-speeding
blessings in obedience
rewarder of those who diligently seek him
parenting with “because I said so..”
iii. Not seeing (rain, boats)
c. All
I surrender all, not some
i. Not a menu
some people treat God’s word like a menu
ii. God has spoken
We say that if God spoke to us telling us to build a boat, then we would
but He has spoken
God’s word
dangerous prayer- Holy Spirit, is there anything your word says that I am not listening to?
iii. Matthew 7:24-27
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
“And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
“The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”
Lives without Christ build a house of cards

3. Be a Superhero
3. Be a Superhero
a. Noah saved his family
Hebrews 11:7 (NASB95)
By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
His life made a difference in other people’s lives (7 others)
i. Ark represents salvation
ii. Parallel to return of Christ and final judgement
communion-
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
iii. Matthew 24:36-39
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
“For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.
“For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,
and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Are you on the Ark, have you accepted Jesus
deliver the message to save your family
b. Called to preach
peter loved noah, and referenced him 3 times
i. 1 peter 3:20-21, 2 peter 2:5
who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.
Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Parallel to the Salvation of the Ark to the Salvation we have in Jesus Christ
Heart of God, God patiently waited
and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;
Noah shared with others the way of God
you aren’t doing it right
there’s a better way
It’s possible that Noah shared the offer of salvation of the Ark
ii. 2 peter 3:3-9 none should perish
Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts,
and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.”
For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water,
through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.
But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Salvation is the plan, the desire of God, but there is a Judgement coming
What are we supposed to be doing?
Preaching the word
make disciples of all nations
share the gospel
the kingdom of God is now
We have been warned for more than just our own escape, but so that we can share that salvation to those around us and to save our own families
Conclusion: hebrews 11:7 "when warned" "holy fear" Not seen but promised - will we be the one in a million, do it all, and be a Superhero? There is such thing as too late.
Hebrews 11:7 (NASB95)
By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,
and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire,
dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our testimony to you was believed.
Noah’s son’s wives had families, mothers and fathers, who didn’t hear the call
not everyone will listen
How many of you want to be a superhero?
