Main Point: Before you do something about injustice, you have to understand what justice is.
To encourage students to spend time in the Bible to understand the morality that comes from God.
I am a marvel guy- DC it’s ok but Marvel it’s just better. One of my favorite Marvel movies is Captain America: Civil War. The reason why this movie is so good, not only contains a lot of cool characters but Tom holland is in it. But Seriously, basically the plot of the movie is that there is some pressure on the avengers to submit to government because of collateral damage in several cities. Iron believes that the right thing is to submit, whereas Captain america believes that they should be free to save and protect humanity.
Basically this movie is all about doing the right thing. But who is right? Iron man or Captain america? How would they decide? You can go back and watch the rest of the movie, but what I want to focus on is the question- how do we know what the right thing to do is? How do we seek justice?
I think it’s important to define the two words: Justice simply means something is right, fair, or equal. Injustice is the opposite of that. So when we talk about injustice, we’re talking about the things in our world that are not right, unfair, or unequal.
Again, how do we know what is right, unfair and unequal?
Our country is deeply divided about many topics. Specially climate change, gun control, government involvement in health care, abortion, immigration, sexuality, and even now, freedom of religion.
Now, I know that as a middle schooler you might think, well I don’t fully understand and you may not fully care, but students hear me on this, you need to care. Your future depends on the decisions that you will make.
Again, but how would you know which side is right? Both sides cannot be fully right on everything. Someone has to be wrong. But how do WE know?
Let’s read a passage that I think will give us some good principles to consider.
John 15:18-27
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
God is just. (V. 18-19)
The reason the world hated Jesus is that he pointed to the sin in the world.
Jesus defines morality. (V. 22-25)
It is because of Jesus that we know what is right and wrong.
There were ceremonial laws, civil laws and moral laws.
Don’t wear two types of clothing. Deuteronomy 22:9–11
Don’t plant two different seeds in a garden. Leviticus 19:19
Don’t eat pork. (Leviticus 11:7).
The Old Testament reveals that God is just.
The Old Testament is a clear picture that we cannot achieve holiness on our own.
The Old Testament is not discounted, it’s fulfilled.
The Holy Spirit is our guide.
If we allow the HS to guide us through the reading of the BIble and prayer, then we can do something about injustice
We are called to do something- Matthew 5:13-16 (Salt and light)- but not based on what you think its good but based on what God says it’s good
John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Because God is just, we can know what justice is. Because Jesus defines morality we can know right from wrong. Because the Holy Spirit is our guide, we can DO what is right.
