2 Timothy 1:15–18 “You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus (Phy gel us) and Hermogenes. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus (ON uh SIF uh rhus), for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.”
Cancel Culture and a Test of Loyalty
Cancel Culture and a Test of Loyalty
Paul was cancelled
This is why Timothy or others could possibly be ashamed
Arrested for doing no wrong
The message that went against that days public opinion
Anyone who is a believer and sides with Paul is to be shamed
Shame is a huge motivator
Shame might have kept you from doing certain sins
But in a negative way it could keep you from standing by what you believed because of how you think you will be perceived
Paul by the Jews
Traitor
hater of the temple
despised traditions

Causing trouble a threat to the empire
He was accused of being

Suffering to share with Christ
Many of the Disciples turned away 4:10
John 6:66 “After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.”
Matthew 26:31–33 “Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.””
Matthew 26:34–35 “Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.”
Luke 22:48 “but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?””
Matthew 26:56 “But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.”
Pulled the sword for a moment
Then left
Luke 22:60–62 “But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.”
Are we strong enough to do this on our own?
We discussed this last week
When we don’t fall into the temptation that causes us to abandon God
Pulled so hard
Then say look what I did
You better watch out because you could fall further than you ever imagined
Some of us have been there

Phygelus and Hermogenes gave into their own passions
And did not help an Apostle for Jesus Christ when he needed help

Lessons
Lessons
Are you faithful or faithless?
Are you refreshing to your brothers and sister?
Are you willing to sacrifice yourself to serve others?
Hebrews 10:32–39 “But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.”
