Read 1 Peter 1:3-9
1 Peter 1:3–9 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

The Greatest hope of an Exile

1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Exiles will bless God for what he has done
Peter acknowledges that our salvation is a gift from God alone
He makes this big proclamation about God
Remember he is writing mainly to Jewish Christians and he is reminding them about the God who authored our salvation
Normally a Jew will praise God the creator and liberator noting what God means to them
Here is reminds them that more than the God who created everything and the God who saved them from Egypt
This is God the father of Jesus Christ
The one who has truly delivered us from sin
This is the God we worship
This is the God we Glorify
This is the God is exalted, praised and worshiped because of what he has done for us
He has caused us to be born again into a living hope
Peter reminds his readers of how their salvation was won
it was a work of God through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ
The Christian story is one of what God has done for us
as exiles we have hope in what God has done through his son
and the unshakable hope we have cannot be taken away from us
What does he say here in verse 4
We are born again to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading
What a hope we may be here for a while but what God has won for us can not be taken away and wont change
It doesnt get old and loose its luster
It doesnt go bad
doesnt expire
But we have hope of this beautiful eternity in front of us
God is working in the life of the believer guarding their salvation for the day that Christ returns to make all things right
We have hope in this world because the one who created it and us is actively saving us from this world
He is actively preserving the believers for something greater
And this is the greatest hope of an exile that God saves and continues to preserve us for an eternity with him

Hope through the trials

1 Peter 1:6–7 ESV
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
it is because of this great hope that believers can preserver in this life
we rejoice in this hope even though we walk in this broken world
Peter doesnt put a false veneer on our walk as believers
Again he is writing to people who live in exile
Living in exile is not easy
to constantly feel out of place is hard
But Peter reminds us of our great hope even in this
though for a little while you are grieved by trials
we stand in hope that we will be glorified when Christ returns
the trials in this life serve a purpose for believers
to refine their faith
James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Hope breeds faith

1 Peter 1:8–9 ESV
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
