Intro

Trinity is 3 in 1
Last week we learned that Jesus is God, He has to be God in order to accomplish all that He accomplished on the cross eternally for our sins He must be God.
This week we will be talking about the Holy Spirit as our great counselor and our great helper.
John 14:15–27 ESV
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

The Holy Spirit is something that is often misunderstood or mystified by our culture today.
There are many people today that have confused the role of the Holy Spirit and treat Him as if he is some power granting genie that will give you super miracle working power.
Many people often refer to the Holy Spirit as a thing.
This is wrong!
The Holy Spirit is a person within the Trinity.
He is living and active with in us.
It’s also important to understand that the Holy Spirit is the part of the trinity that we experience and interact with here on earth today.

Tonight we will be looking at how the Holy Spirit enables us to glorify God to those around us

John 14:15 ESV
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Jesus here will begin to talk about the Holy Spirit but from the aspect of a loving relationship that we have with Him.
I love my wife and because I love my wife there are certain boundaries and rules that I follow.
For instance I do not date other women, because I love my wife.
I help my wife with things around the house and with raising Titus.
I invest in our relationship by spending time with her
I don’t do these things because I’m trying to act like a good husband, I do these things because I genuinely love my wife and want to cherish her.
Jesus is asking the same from us, if we genuinely love Jesus then doing what He asks us to do is not following a list of rules in order to get something from God but it is instead doing the things that we know will bless God and honor Him in the RELATIONSHIP that we have with Him!.
Jesus helped to boil down the commandments for us to follow.
Love the Lord God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength
Love your neighbor as yourself
So Jesus is asking us to love Him in this beautiful, God honoring relationship that we have with Him
John 14:16–18 ESV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Here Jesus begins prophesying what will take place once He is gone.
The first thing He says is that the Helper (Holy Spirit) WILL BE sent from God to be with us forever.
Next we see that unless you are a believer in Jesus (if you are in the world) you cannot know the Holy Spirit
Finally we see that the Holy Spirit is of the same substance as Jesus (I will come to you) Vs. 18
Jesus here is talking about the day of pentecost and when the Holy Spirit would descend upon earth and indwell the hearts of believers everywhere.
Before the day of Pentecost the Spirit only dwelled with certain individuals like prophets but He was not active in every Jews heart.
Gray says this sometimes and I always think its so cool
When we get to heaven I always thought I would have a ton of questions for the Jews that wandered the desert like what was it like to wake up everyday and have manna on the ground
Or what was it like to see a pillar of fire leading you through the desert
Or what was it like to see the Red Sea parted
But they will ask us what was it like to have the Spirit of the God dwell inside your hearts.
The truth is that if you are a believer of Jesus Christ then the Spirit of God dwells within you! And this should be SOOO encouraging to us because in the moments when we feel weak, when we feel alone, when we feel as if God is distant we are reminded that He is closer that any other being in the entire universe.
John 14:19–22 ESV
19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”
So in these verses it can get a little confusing as Jesus is saying things like I am in the Father, you in me, I in you
A real easy way to condense this down to understand what it saying is this.
The deep loving relationship that Jesus has with God the Father is available to those who call Jesus Christ their Lord, and the way that God will relate to us here on this Earth is through the Holy Spirit.
This does not mean that we are elevated to the same status as Jesus, but we have the ability to draw close to God in a relationship with Him, the same kind of relationship that Jesus models for us in the Bible.
And it is the Holy Spirit who is that connection that we have to God the Father.
Judas (not Iscariot) asks a pretty interesting question to Jesus
How is it that we will know you but the world will not?
This is an extremely important question to ask in our day and age because there are false teachers all over Tiktok, social media, the WORLD! that tell people that God is so loving that everyone will one day be saved. That you can live your life however you want and because God just loves everyone, then everyone gets to go to heaven, everyone gets the same treatment because God is love.
But Jesus is about to tell Judas something that contradicts this false teaching.
John 14:23–24 ESV
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
Once again Jesus reaffirms that those that call Him Lord are the ones who love Him, and if you love Him you will obey what He has asked you to do.
Jesus put us into two camps
Those that believe and obey
Those that do not believe and disobey
Those that believe He says God will draw near and make His home with the believer.
Those that do not Jesus has already said will not have that same relationship.
God is all about relationship.
Your obedience to God is an obedience of the heart! He desires that you would love Him with your heart.
Just like I love my wife and honor and cherish her and seek to do things for her out of the love that I have for her
God is also asking you to follow Him out of the love that you have for Him.
And He provides us with His Spirit who is constantly encouraging us to go deeper in relationship with Him.
Deeper in obedience to Him.
John 14:25–26 ESV
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
So when Jesus asked us to love Him and obey His commandments we know that all the commandments in the Bible can be summed up by saying Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. AND Love your neighbor as yourself
We see here that God has sent the Holy Spirit to help us.
John 14:26 tells us that the Holy Spirit will teach us, and guide us as we grow in our relationship with Him
