Purity is a Posture

Matthew 5:8 ESV

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

You have received more mercy from God then you have ever extended

You have grieved God more than anyone has grieved you

Aren’t you thankful that God has shorter memory of sin than you do of other people’s sins

What is Purity in the heart?

You are what you are in your heart

John 2:25 ESV

25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

Your heart is your entire being and consists of 4 things.

The mind

Proverbs 23:7 (ESV)

7 for he is like one who is inwardly calculating.

Inwardly calculating reflects the idea of calculating not just in your mind, but in you, your heart.

I love the NKJV version

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”

You are what you think in your heart.

Emotions

John 14:1 ESV

1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

Will

Daniel 1:8 ESV

8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

What does will mean?

a person's choice or desire in a particular situation.

The Spiritual Heart: (a) purposes (Daniel 1:8; Acts 11:23; 2 Corinthians 9:7); (b) has intentions (Hebrews 4:12-13) and (c) obeys (Romans 6:17). External actions originated in the heart (Proverbs 4:23; Jeremiah 11:8; Mark 7:21-23; Romans 6:17).

Resolve comes from an inner conviction that a certain way to go is the right way. Resolved here means purposed in your heart. like the new king James version states:

8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies - NKJV

Think of choices you make, where does that stem from?

We have a will to something and that will is driven from the heart.

Conscience

Hebrews 4:12 ESV

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Our hearts our naturally impure.

Matthew 15:18–19 ESV

18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
