Sin:Its Character and Universality
The character what sin looks like what sin does.
Romans 6:23 NKJV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin brings forth death.
Universality how sin effects everyone
This title is essentially stating
Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We spoke about how Adam sinned and by his sin being imputed to us. ( That means its counted to our charge) We are Adams offspring. And man is condemned because of the first Adam.
You maybe say thats unfair but I think we don’t understand the gravity of sin.
There has been many non- biblical approaches to sin.
Sin is just an illusion
Sin is not real.
Sin is something that can be worked out of your life.
Sin is just mental illness something that can be treated by a pill.
The problem is that When you deny the existence of sin you deny a moral God.
and ultimately you deny the scriptures
You deny the Holiness of God. Which is one of the pivot attributes of God
Different cultures and religions have different understanding of sin.
In Polytheism ( hinduism) different gods have different standards and rules.
- Sin thus comes to be seen as a violation of the whims of individual gods and goddesses within a pantheon ( the pantheon is just important or respected men who control these gods, and there rules).
Because it is believed that these gods control the forces of nature, sin and repentance often is view as illness, suffering, death.
In order to regain favor with these gods they need sacrifice, offering, magic and confession.
- In the polytheistic cultures of the ancient Near East, there was no understanding of a single, overarching divine will that governs humanity. Rather, as
Oswalt points out, “there are many gods and goddesses, and each … has varying likes and dislikes.… What one god wants, another god hates.
Then you have sin in society that typically adjust according to the wants and needs of the people.
So there is no concrete moral absolutes there is only feelings likes and dislikes. Is how we determine what is sin and not.
So what is sin?
Sin is any lack of conformity to the character of God, whether is be an act, disposition, or state. ~ Lewis Sperry Chafer
Sin is sin because its different from who God is. God is eternally holy.
And apart from the righteousness of God man eternally depraved.
Psalm 51:5 NKJV
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
The doctrine of total depravity isn’t saying that every man is as evil as he could be, but rather that man, throughout his nature, is corrected by sin. We see in Romans 1,2,3. The sin of the moral man, the immoral man , and the religious man all having fall short of the glory of God.
Every sin is a violation against God.
Psalm 51:4 NKJV
4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
Luke 15:18 NKJV
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,
Turn to
Psalm 32:1–2 NKJV
1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.
I loved that it says blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven.
typically someone blessed if they are living a curtain way. And theres reciprocity because of there obedience.
You have four words for violating Gods perfect standard
Transgression- The violation of a law or duty or moral principle. A crime
Transgression is forgiven - forgiveness is difficult because it involves a loss.
If you steal $100 from me and I forgive you I suffer because I lost $100.
Thats why Christ had to suffer.
Sin- an act or feeling that transgresses something forbidden or ignores something required by God’s law or character; whether in thought, feeling, speech, or action.
So you see the transgression is just the act. But the sin is the act and intent, the thought the feeling and the speech. Even if you didn’t act the fact that you wanted to act is a sin.
If I say I’m gonna hit you but don’t do it they can’t lock me up for assault. Maybe other things .
But if I think I’m gonna hit you but don’t do it then I’m in the clear before man but not before God.
Maybe man can forgive a transgression, but one God can cover sin. Just because of the depth of our sin.
Sin is covered - sin is such a inward work.
Iniquity- Is guilt caused by sin. A constant state of guilt.
Iniquity is the consequence of sin.
Iniquity not imputed - counted to our charge
That guilt of shame that lingers- Guilt says I’ve didn’t something wrong shame says I am something wrong.
