A. You can know with certainty

1. This seems to have been common knowledge.

2. There’s also a sense in which we know with absolute certainty.

B. God is the cause.

1. Does God actually cause all things to work together?

Romans 8:28 (ESV)
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good...

Is, “all things” the subject of the verb “work together?”

Or, does God “work together all things?”

2. God’s control of His creation is an unbroken theme in Scripture.

Psalm 135:6 NASB95
Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.
Isaiah 46:10 NASB95
Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;

3. God is sovereignly involved in the smallest details.

Matthew 10:29–30 NASB95
“Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

4. God’s control, even of the bad things, means that all things will truly work together for good.

Colossians 1:16 NASB95
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
Colossians 2:15 NASB95
When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.

C. “Good” is the goal.

1. What specifically is the “good?”

Genesis 50:20 NASB95
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.

D. Be patient and refuse to grumble in trials.

1. Grumbling leads to rebellion.

Matthew 15:19 NASB95
“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

2. Grumbling is a trap that steals your joy and peace of mind.

3. One day these burdens will seem to have been light.

Psalm 119:71 NASB95
It is good for me that I was afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes.

God has promised good to His children, so be patient and resist grumbling in trials.
