Mark 1:14-20
Mark 1:14-20
Introduction:
I. His call is personal- Notice that when he is looking for disciples Jesus does not go the synagogue. Doesn’t go to prayer meeting. He goes to where the regular people are. He goes to the working class, the ones who is chewing tobacco and cussing each other out.
a. Peter and Andrew, James and John are the only ones called that night, but they are not the only ones there. This is a dock, where many people were fishing. Yet Jesus calls them out.
b. They were working: When God called them, they were already working. They were not waiting for fish to come to them, they were not reading books on how to catch bigger fish. they were busy
Casting (Andrew and Peter) - Throwing out their nets
Mending (James and John)
Mending (making complete-to strengthen)- if we are going to be “outside” this year we must first make sure that our own nets are mended.
Many of us are casting with broken nets- you can’t tell me how to fish and you fishing with broken nets.
The Williams brothers said it like this “sweep around your own front door” can I ask a question? What does your net look like this morning
Be sure of your own salvation 2 Peter1:10
Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
Notice: He finds them where they are, he speaks their language with which they are wholly familiar,
In contrast, when we see people, we want folk to jump through hoops and prove themselves worthy to follow jesus before we can let them in. They have to change their dress, basically be initiated into a church culture in order for God to use them.
c. There are always 2 calls - This was not the first call these four had. Back in John 1:35–42 , but that was a call to salvation. This time it’s a call to service.
many of us stop at the call to salvation.
II. The call is private
a. You were not there when he called me!
b. When Jesus calls you it’s a heart thing…you might have been sitting there when I felt it, but it was private.
c. stop trying to figure out why i’m shouting, why i’m running and nobody is chasing me…I hear him calling
d. When Jesus called them, Zebedee the dad was there, but he didn’t feel anything. Other fisherman were there and they didn’t feel anything. It was just for these 4. evidently, when they met Jesus, something had been stirring on the inside of them, that when they saw him again, they were ready to say yes.
e. as a result of a private call, they got up. They left momma, daddy, wife,
III. The Call is Public
The Lord does his work privately, but he can’t get the glory until it is worked out publicly.
a. if you walk away from the public will know. these men left everything.
b. if the people you deal with ain’t noticed you gone..you ain’t followed Jesus.

IV. The Call was profound
“follow me” and I will “make you fishers of men”
