Section 1 Review of Sanctification

What is Sanctification?
It is the process of set apart from the world and it’s evil desires for God.
It is both an external completed work done by God and an internal work whereby we are also being continually set apart from sin in this life.
The external is a real legal change that is accomplished completely by God.
The internal work is also done by God empowering us with a new heart, desires and loves.
The practical outworking of this change is where a true Christian joins with God to live in newness of life.
How is a Christian Sanctified?
Externally — actual real changes that happen to us when we are saved. These are external, legal changes with real life consequences.
We are brought into a New Kingdom (Col 1:13-14)
We are given citizenship in this Kingdom. (Philippians 3:20, 2 Co. 5:20)
We are adopted into the family of the King. (Eph 1:5, Romans 8:15, and Gal. 4:5)
We are and become a chosen generation for God, called out of this dark world into His marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)
We have an inheritance reserved for us in Heaven. (1 Peter 1:3-5)
Internally
The whole process starts when we are given super natural knowledge and assurance of the truth of the gospel. The Holy Spirit then continues to teach us throughout our life, making the Word of God alive in our hearts. (2 Co. 4:6, 1 Co. 2:9-12)
We are given a new Heart with New desires and the Holy Spirit comes to reside within us. (Eze. 36:22-32, Phil. 2:12-13, John 7:38-39)
We are given a love for God. (Romans 5:5)
We are given a love for the brethren. (1 John 3:14-15)
This internal change is so great that it is called being born again and we become a New Creation. (John 3, 2 Co. 5:17)
It is so long lasting that it is described as a spring of water within us which quenches our thirst throughout eternity. (John 4:13-14)
Practically — The effect of this internal and external change is an outward obedience and love for God, His Word, and His people.
A real external change does happen.
Romans 6:17–18 “17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
Romans 8:29 “29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”
Ephesians 2:10 “10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
James 2:26 “26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
It is an on going day by day separating from sin, never finished in this life, in which we join with God, waging war both internally with our flesh and externally with the world and the devil’s.
1 John 1:7–9 “7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Ephesians 2:1–4 “1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,”
Ephesians 6:12–13 “12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Col 3; Eph 4:1-3 & Eph 4:17-24 ; Romans 12:1-2

Section 2 God’s Righteousness revealed. (The just shall live by Faith) Romans 1:18-8:39

Theme: Romans 4:16“Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all”
Outline:
Man’s universal Guilt: Romans 1:18-3:20.
Justification: Romans 3:21-4:25
What is Justification?
Justification is a legal term in which a person is declared righteous by a judge of a moral offense.
It is a one time, complete, irrevocable action where our sins are put on Christ and His righteousness in put on us.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
How is a Man Justified in front of God.
Romans 3:21–24 “21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,”
Justified by faith apart from the works of the law.
Both Jews and Gentiles.
Both before and after circumcision.
Both before and after the giving of the law.
Sanctification: Romans 5-8.
Sanctification is the process of being set apart or separated from the world and it’s evil desires for God.
Theme Verse: Romans 5:20–21“20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Sin abounds
Grace abounds even more unto righteousness. (hope and more than hope real victory in living the life that is dedicated to God.)
Romans 5:1-11 Our new relationship with God after justification (Salvation).
Peace Romans 5:1 “1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
We are given a love for God Romans 5:5 “5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Loved by God Romans 5:8 “8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Reconciled and saved: Romans 5:10–11 “10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”
Romans 5:12-21 Our new relationship with original Sin (The source of sin) (The start of our Sanctification, our new life.)
Romans 5:12 “12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—”
Sin entered by Adam and spread to all men resulting in death coming to all through Adams sin.
because all sinned, not individually, but in Adam are mankind sinned, death reigns.
(This is why babies die even in the womb and God can judge men, women and children in His judgments. We are all sinners, from Adam, judged and condemned, guilty in court and will be guilty in practice.)
Romans 5:19 “19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”
The greatest proof that “in Adam” all sinned, is that “in Christ” many are made righteous.
By giving Adam headship of the human race, we fell in Adam.
Yet also by setting up an accountability by headship, we can also be made righteous by one.
This was God’s plan to make a salvation that was completely by Grace and was sure as it rest in the completed work of Christ. Salvation had to be either individually earned through works, or by grace alone.
Romans 4:16 “16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all”
Romans 5:16 “16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.”
Judgment which came from one offense… condemnation of all men.
but. The free gift which came from (because) of the many offenses resulted in Justification of many.
Romans 5:19 “19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”
We were made sinners in Adam.
Those who are saved are made righteous (justified) in Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Romans 10:9–10 “9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Romans 6. Our new lives in the Family of God in direction.
Theme:
We have been freed from sin and are alive to God.
This is looking Forward. It is to show us what direction we are to be going in.
It answers two question from the new believer who understand that salvation is a gift of grace, outside of the works of the law. (Romans 4 referring to David and Abraham being saved before and after circumcision and law, yet both showing that a man is saved by believing in God.)
Can we live in sin because salvation comes from Grace alone?
Romans 6:1 “1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?”
This is real question for the new believer who is just understanding the extent of grace. It makes salvation a free undeserved gift, separate from works. If we continue in sin, God’s grace is shown to be even greater isn’t it?
Romans 6:2 “2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”
Romans 6:3–4 “3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized (immersed) into Christ Jesus were baptized (immersed) into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism (immersion) into death, (Gal 2:20) that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Galatians 2:20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
Galatians 5:24 “24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
This passage has nothing to do with water Baptism, but is confusing because the Greek word is not translated but transliterated.
Romans 6:12–14 “12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
Can we live in sin because the law not longer has dominion over you?
Romans 6:15 “15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!”
Romans 6:16 “16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”
Romans 6:17–18 “17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
Romans 6:22–23 “22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
