The Temptation of Jesus
Matthew 4:1–11
What can we learn from the temptation of Jesus? What can we learn from this passage that will help us get to know Jesus a little more? How did Jesus deal with the devil? What preparation did He take in dealing with the Devil? Do you think the method Jesus used will work for us?
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Jesus knew how to avoid sin and falling to temptation. What exactly did he do in this situation? Lets’ take a look……
He Followed the Spirit
He Followed the Spirit
In Paul’s vocabulary, to walk in the Spirit or be led by the Spirit means to go where the Spirit is going, to listen to his voice, to discern his will, to follow his guidance.
Timothy George
Mark 1:12–13 (KJV 1900)
And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.
He Quoted Scripture
He Quoted Scripture
Throughout these temptations no special resource is open to Jesus. He met temptation in the same way as we must, by using Scripture, and he won the victory.
Leon Morris
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
David tells us that knowing the Word of God is extremely important in avoiding sin.
Psalm 119:11 (KJV 1900)
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.
How well do you know God’s word? Have you memorized Scriptures?
If walking in the Spirit is a matter of walking in truth, then memorizing Scripture and meditating on it are the best things you can do to facilitate that walk.
Charles Stanley
The people God blesses not only read the Word daily, but they study it, memorize it, and meditate on it during the day and night. Their mind is controlled by the Word of God.
Warren W. Wiersbe
If we are to become like Jesus, we must memorize the scriptures. We must live them out in our lives. We must let the Word of God control our minds. That is how we will overcome temptation.
He Remained Faithful
He Remained Faithful
Our ability to stay with God in our closet measures our ability to stay with God out of the closet.
Edward McKendree Bounds
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Jesus knew that worshipping Satan was against God. As Christians, we are to serve God and God alone.
The first foundation of righteousness undoubtedly is the worship of God.
John Calvin
For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
He Relied on God
He Relied on God
I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
Through His life, Jesus relied on the Father in all things. He sought to do God’s will in all things. We must do the same in all life and especially when dealing with Temptation.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Will we follow God and escape the temptation or will we choose to fall? The example of Jesus is to follow God.
Let no man think himself to be holy because he is not tempted, for the holiest and highest in life have the most temptations. How much higher the hill is, so much is the wind there greater; so, how much higher the life is, so much the stronger is the temptation of the enemy.
John Wycliffe
When Christians find themselves exposed to temptation they should pray to God to uphold them, and when they are tempted they should not be discouraged. It is not a sin to be tempted; the sin is to fall into temptation.
Dwight L. Moody
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
