The Book of 1 Peter

1 Peter General Introduction

Peter’s first letter was written to change people

1 Peter General Introduction

If one thing stands out clearly from this letter, it is that Christian congregations were already beginning to know what it was like to live in a hostile environment where other people made it tough for them just because they were Christians

1 Peter General Introduction

First, Peter states the basic characteristics of the Christian life; he gives fundamental teaching on what it means to be a Christian as well as its practical implications (1:13–2:10).

1 Peter General Introduction

Second, building on this theological foundation, Peter discusses how Christians should conduct themselves in various relationships of social and family life

1 Peter General Introduction

But it is in the remainder of the letter that Peter directly addresses the possibility of persecution and opposition

What are emotions?
Emotions are reactions to meaningful events and emotional reactions include cognitive and physiological changes. These changes occur in our thinking and perceptions as well as in our physiology. All of which help prime our bodies to act in a certain way.

“Emotional health? It “is your ability to cope with both positive and negative emotions, which includes your awareness of them.”
Do you truly believe that God cares about your emotional health?
Do you believe that God cares about what you are concerned with?
Do you believe that you are coping well with your emotions?
Do you think that you are emotionally driven?
Emotionally driven people can sometimes find it difficult to think rationally or objectively when their emotions are intense.
Intense emotions can undermine a person’s capacity for rational decision-making, even when the individual is aware of the need to make careful decisions.
1 Peter 5:7 ESV
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Anxieties: care n. — a cause for feeling concern.
We are dealing with things that cause deep, overwhelming concern

Your belief system - drives your thoughts / expectations / Values
Thoughts take on meaning - meaningful
meaning produces emotions
meaning: what is meant by a word, text, concept, or action.
Your belief system will determine your next step…
Change the misbelief…
You have to believe that God cares…
Care: to concern v. — to be relevant or important to.
You are relevant to God…
You are important to God…
But… If you don’t change your believe system, you will be devoured.
1 Peter 5:8 ESV
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Sober-minded: to get self-control ⇔ sober up v. — to curb the controlling influence of inordinate emotions or desires (and therefore become reasonable); conceived of as sobering up from the influence of alcohol.
Satan prowls on emotionally driven people.
People who are drunk with misbelief!
Not only do you have to change your belief system…
You have to be a doer of the word!
1 Peter 5:7 ESV
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Casting: to put on ⇔ hurl v. — to place or put something on something else with great energy; conceived of as throwing on forcefully.
“Casting All”
All or nothing at all!
When you cast you throw your anxieties and the emotions that come with it on Him.
Then I receive the emotions that come with my new belief system!
