Telos: Worship changes us, not God. He is waiting for us to come to the full measure of devotion.
You cannot worship a Being you cannot trust. Confidence is necessary to respect, and respect is necessary to worship.27
A. W. Tozer
Information
Worship- We don’t prepare a table for God, but come to the table He has prepared for us.
Psalm 23:5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.”
Worship is our response of deep seeded gratitude, knowing we are there only because of Jesus.
Inspiration
Matthew 15:22 “And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.””
Have pity upon me quickly, O Sir, son of David. My daughter is badly demonized. But He did not answer her a word.
Kenneth S. Wuest, The New Testament: An Expanded Translation (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1961), Mt 15:21–28.
Matthew 15:25 (AMP)
But she came and, kneeling, worshiped Him and kept praying, Lord, help me!
And having come, she fell upon her knees and touched her forehead to the ground in profound reverence before Him, saying, Sir, be helping me.
Kenneth S. Wuest, The New Testament: An Expanded Translation (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1961), Mt 15:21–28.
Revelation
Matthew 15:26 “But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.””
Kuon- literally, a dog, scavenging canine; (figuratively) a spiritual predator who feeds off others.
[A loose dog was disdained in ancient times – viewed as a "mooch pooch" that ran about as a scavenger.]
2 Peter 2:22 NKJV
But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”
He pushes her to deal with her own attitude, and then responds
Whereas the first commandment forbids us to worship false gods, the second commandment forbids us to worship the true God falsely. How we worship matters nearly as much to God as whom we worship.
Philip Graham Ryken; R. Kent Hughes
1. Worship no other Gods
2. Do not worship in vain(empty)
Application
How are we coming before the Lord tonight? In humility? In gratitude?
Transformation
The banquet is prepared, everything is ready. But are we?
Luke 14:16–24 “Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’ And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”
