Song- I’ll Meet you in the Morning”
OBIT
Hear the word of the Lord:
Psalm 91 NKJV
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”

"A Time Of Parting"
Acts 20: 36-38
We come today to celebrate the life and influence of Mrs. Katie Gillespie.

INTRO:

1. Paul had just completed his 2nd missionary tour. He was on a trip to Jerusalem where he had been warned he would be arrested. He called for the elders of Ephesus to come together in order to encourage them before taking his trip and tribulation.
This world needs a lot more encouragers today.
Katie was always and encouragement to me.
In our text, Paul was preparing to leave, he was saying his goodbyes.
2. Goodbyes are always moving experiences.
Let us examine Paul’s goodbye and find comfort today as we say so long to Mrs. Katie
Our text this afternoon is:
Acts 20:36–38 NKJV
And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. Then they all wept freely, and fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spoke, that they would see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.
IT WAS:

I. A TIME OF SORROW:

A. Because they would "see his face no more."
They knew that on this side of eternity, they wouldn’t see Paul again
That brought them sorrow and pain.
1. Death is a similar experience.
This is one reason folks have such a hard time dealing with death. It is hard when you know you will not see a loved one again.
If we aren’t careful as we move through the grief process, we can get stuck focusing just on the here and now and the longing to see our loved one which cannot be fulfilled.
2. Katie was a very important part of this family’s life and it will be difficult because they will not see her again in this life.
She was an important part of our church as well. I have missed her since her illness has kept her from gathering with us.
We always held out hope for one more time… but it wasn’t to be
B. They were sorrowful Because of the effect Paul had on their lives.
1. Paul had introduced them to Jesus Christ.
He had led them to the Lord.
2. Paul then nurtured their faith.
He was there as they grew in grace, as they too became disciples he was there for them.
3. Paul watched over them and instructed them in the faith.
He wrote the epistle of Ephesus to them
**Miss Katie had an impact upon our church. As a pastor, I get a unique perspective on the worship service. Believe it or not, your faces reveal a lot about you. Whenever I saw Mrs. Katie in worship, I saw a saint in love with her Lord and Savior!
Her face showed joyful worship every time I saw her before, during and after the services.
She Knew the Lord and found peace and joy in Him
Isaiah 49:16 NKJV
See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.
She knew His continuing presence in her ilfe
She always had a huge smile and was quick to laugh.
Her laughter inspire others to join in and laugh
She brought us joy!
You couldn’t help but be encouraged in her presence
C. Their sorrow was openly expressed.
verse 37: "and they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck."
1. Weeping is a language that is understood by all.
Humans grieve
It is natural and not something to avoid
2. Even Jesus wept.
When Lazarus had died and He came to Bethany we find this:
John 11:33–36 NKJV
Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
(A good preacher friend of mine used to say he didn’t trust a man that didn’t cry)
D. Sorrow in the struggle
Life has its moments of sorrow
Due to Satan’s influence we are in a hostile world
1 Peter 5:6–13 NKJV
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son.
IT WAS:

II. A TIME OF SEPARATION:

A. Paul was leaving them for the last time.
1. As we gather and saw so long for now, we are reminded that this is a temporary separation.
Yes, we have eternity to ponder and long for, but now we are having to be apart
2. it is a separation
We have our memories to cherish and share, and we should regularly
But we also have to endure the time between now and the resurrection
It is a loss that will be felt.
3. Each and every day you & I get closer to our leaving this world. You see June 11, 1968 I began to die. We aren’t guaranteed of tomorrow.
Proverbs 27:1
Proverbs 27:1 NKJV
Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Hebrews 9:27 NKJV
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
4. We must be ready for this day as it might very well be here before you know it.
IT WAS:

III. A TIME OF VICTORY:

A. They realized that they indeed would see Paul again.
Not in this life but in the life to come.
From an eternal perspective, there is no permanent separation when a loved one who is saved passes from this life.
1. I believe that I one day will get to see Mrs. Katie again.
(I Thessalonians 4:13-15
1 Thessalonians 4:13–15 NKJV
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.
2. Death is the very first step we take into eternity.
We can have complete victory in death thru Jesus Christ our Lord. Today I believe that Granny Gill has complete victory.
Paul says to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord
While Mrs. Katie is with the Lord, she has victory!
We can look forward to the day of our reunion
3. Mrs. Katie’s last couple of years, she endured difficulties from her declining health.
When she entered eternity, all of that was left behind.
Victory was all she knew!
4. Resurrection is coming
Today if you want to see Mrs. Katie again then you are going to have to give your heart over to Jesus Christ. You see we can’t bring her back.
King David was grieving while his son was ill and then the child passed away. Look at the truth and attitude he had:
2 Samuel 12:22–23 NKJV
And he said, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who can tell whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”
If we are to see Mrs. Katie again, we must go to her.
To go to her, we must have eternal life which can only come through faith in the Lord
John 3:16–18 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
We know that we have the assurance of eternity because nothing can seperate us from God’s love
Romans 8:37–39 NKJV
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
My challenge for your today is to be ready.
Be ready when this day comes for you
Be ready when the Lord returns with His own.

Song- Mansion Over the Hilltop

Graveside
Psalm 121 NKJV
A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Today, we have come as far as we can with tent Mrs. Gilipsie inhabited while here on Earth. Just as she left this tent and went to be with her Lord and loved ones, we leave this tent here today.
We leave today, with memories. May we continue to live our lives inspired by and sharing those memories.
We leave today with hope.
HOpe that only comes to believers.
Let us hear from God one more time.
1 Corinthians 15:50–58 NKJV
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
Closing prayer
God of compassion, be especially with ( Mrs. Gilipsie’s family who all mourn today.  Surround them with your love and peace. Help them today and in all in the days ahead. God, we remember all the good things we shared with Mrs. Katie  which are now part of our history.  We thank you for her gifts and skills and the way they were used to benefit her family and her community
We know she has been significant in the lives of all of us and that our lives were blessed by her presence.
