Book two - Psalms 42-72) The sense of wonder in our singing and praise - a reminder that depression and discouragement can be defeated in our praise of God.
Ps 42-49 is written by the Sons of Korah, that same levite who rebelled against Moses. (Numbers 16:1-35) He was killed but his descendants remained faithful to God, continuing to serve in the temple. David anointed them to serve as choir leaders (1Chron 6:31-38) and they did so for centuries (2Chron 20:18, 19). Some Hebrew texts have 42 & 43 as one Psalm.
Please as you hear this tonight, know that if you truly know God, this is real. That you can experience this tonight. That your God is on your side.

Psalm 42

When we are depressed - meditation on Gods love and compassion are the best salve. Author: Sons of Korah
Psalm 42:title–3 NKJV
To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the Sons of Korah. 1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, “Where is your God?”
Crying hurting so hard couldn’t eat. Can you remember the taste of your tears? Where you are crying so hard they flow into your mouth/nasal? We cry so much we need the water God provides.
soul: nephesh: life, the self. Not necessarily your immortal soul, but our life. Like we say someone full of life
When I am thinking I need a snack, my wife tells me I need to drink water. Thats what my body “needs”. The deer longs for water, needs it. Water is life. The water of our life is? Jesus. John 7:37–39 “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
If our souls are longing for Him. and if we know that, our tears can can be a blessing of nourishment because they are His.
often when we are off or wrong in our ways, we don’t drink, we don't partake and it affects us greatly.
Psalm 42:4 NKJV
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.
someone far from or banned for some reason from worship in the temple?
Psalm 42:5 NKJV
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.
We often question ourselves and how the Holy Spirit is or isn't working in our lives.
Psalm 42:6–10 (NKJV)
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me; Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, And from the heights of Hermon, From the Hill Mizar. 7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me. 8 The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me— A prayer to the God of my life. 9 I will say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” 10 As with a breaking of my bones, My enemies reproach me, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
From the far north to the far south - we remember everywhere we go.
How does v8 play out in your life now versus when you were younger in christ.
do you see yourself praising him more in your circumstances even now? Or have you been finding yourself far from him?
sing His songs in the night. Cry out to Him. The more the world tries to break you, the more you need to cry out.
Psalm 42:11 (NKJV)
11 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
Countenance, looking up, raising our head to look at him and the world around us. We also note that this comes from Hope in who? Praising who?
Since the ultimate aim of Bible study is to know God better, what does this chapter tell me about God’s character and personality?
Since God has given me the Bible to change my life, what needed corrections or adjustments in my habits or character come to mind as I explore this chapter?
In this chapter, what are … the key verses, the key phrases, the key words? the key points or principles—and how do they work in my life?
In this chapter, do I see any … commands to obey?promises to claim? standards to live by?
Psalm 43
This song explores hope in a time of discouragement, which is only in God.
By: Sons of Korah
Psalm 43:1–5
1 Vindicate me, O God, And plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man! 2 For You are the God of my strength; Why do You cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 3 Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy; And on the harp I will praise You, O God, my God. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
What are the qualities of the nation/man that are against them/us.
Are we going to the altar? Are we pleading to Him? David said to Saul, 1 Samuel 24:15 “Therefore let the Lord be judge, and judge between you and me, and see and plead my case, and deliver me out of your hand.””
Look at v4, what are some significant ways god shows himself in your life?
Lets ask some of the same questions we did about the last one.
