Intro
Does anyone want to share their experience this last week using the SOAP acronym?
Who likes shoes?
What kind?
How many are too many?
What is the most you would spend on a pair?
How many of you know that there are different shoes for different occasions? Jobs? Activities?
Tonight we are going to introduce the topic of running
We will be talking about this for a few weeks and I just want to introduce the subject tonight
I want us to dig in to the scripture but I also want to give you some background.
Body
Question: What do you want to do when you grow up?
Question: What does God want you to do when you grow up?
Is there a difference?
Psalm 20:4 NIV
4 May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
Psalm 37:4 NIV
4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
We don’t always know the ending at the beginning, right?
God gave me a desire for children
Doctors said no
But I have 4
And now I have so many more
Doing Youth Ministry
Doing Children’s Ministry
And he ain’t done yet
One desire I absolutely don’t have is to run
Never could find my pace
Would sprint a mile, throw up, and repeat
heart racing, no breath, body shaking — not good
But we are going to talk about a different run.
Not physical
Spiritual running
Can still be hard
Can suck
Can be painful
Can be hard
Let’s look at our passage
Hebrews 12:1–3 NIV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
We are going to be looking at this closely the next couple weeks but I want to highlight one of the themes of features of the book of Hebrews. The key word used most in Hebrews is the word “Better”
“Jesus is better than the angels and all OT mediators. He offers better rest, covenant, hope, priesthood, sacrifice/blood atonement, and better promises.”
You may have big plans for your life and YES God wants to give your the desires of your heart but I can tell you that they are going to be even better than you dreamed.
Training starts now, not after high school, after college, once your married or have that great job
It’s time to lace up the shoes and get training.
