Exodus 35:30–36:7 ESV
30 Then Moses said to the people of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, 32 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. 34 And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer. 1 “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the Lord has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded.” 2 And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work. 3 And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, 4 so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, 5 and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” 6 So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, 7 for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.

Introduction

God has reestablished His covenant with Israel
Now, building the tabernacle
Last week - Participation through offering.
Exodus 35:29 “29 All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord.”
Today - participation through building

Spirit-Filled Service

Sovereignly chosen by God
Voluntary labor - Not slave
Exodus 36:2 “And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work.”
A willing heart
Supernaturally enabled by the Holy Spirit
First time someone is said to be filled with God’s spirit.
Exodus 35:31 “he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship,”
Master craftsmen
Likely developed over many years in Egypt.
Craftsmen school established
Exodus 35:34 “And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan.”
2 Timothy 2:2 “what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
Spiritual gifts today
1 Corinthians 12:4–7 “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
1 Corinthians 12:11 “All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”
Spirit equips us for work that is not necessarily “spiritual”
God gives skill, intelligence, knowledge, and craftsmanship
All of life is spiritual
Gifts are not for self, for God’s glory and for others.

The Beauty of His House

God is concerned with the beauty of the Tabernacle
Like heaven
The Tabernacle, In all its beauty, is a mere shadow and copy of the true heavenly tabernacle.
A place of unending new beauties.
Revelation 21:18–21 ESV
18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
The greatest beauty - Revelation 21:3 “3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”
Beauty is a testimony that it is made by God
God is beautiful and is the author of beauty.
Reflection of His beauty
That His people may see His beauty
Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”

Everyone has a Role

Everyone is participating in the building of the Tabernacle
They all have a role
Some gave donations, others were craftsmen, some were builders or weavers.
Together they gave more than enough
Everyone is needed in the church.
Joel Beeke,
The Reformation Heritage KJV Study Bible The Construction and Filling of the Tabernacle (35:1–40:38)

The motivation to build God’s dwelling place comes from a willing heart (v. 29). The church is built through cheerful giving and voluntary service of the people. The best of pastors can do little without a people willing to serve the Lord (Rom. 12:11). How are you using your abilities to serve in the church? What motivates you and how motivated are you?

Romans 12:11 “Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.”

Application

If the creation can be that beautiful, how much more beautiful is the Creator
This is what worship is and what glorifying God is.
Our eyes are opened to His beauty and we know Him to be supreme in beauty.
So, we desire Him above all.
Love beauty - God
Hate what is ugly - sin
Pearl and Treasure
He is the fullness of all desirable qualities.
The love of sin can only be expelled by a greater love of God
The beauty of Christ
Hebrews 1:3 “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”
Evangelism: Is how the church displays the beauty of Christ
The beauty of heaven
God is the giver of all gifts
God enables the workman and God gets the glory.
Use your gifts for God’s glory.
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
What abilities has God given to you?
Are you thankful?
Do you use them for God’s glory?
If you believe yourself to be lacking ask of God
James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
Holy Spirit is needed to build God’s house

1 Corinthians 14:12 “12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.”
One day you will share in this beauty - Ephesians 5:27 “so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”
