Creation and Blessing: A Guide to the Study and Exposition of Genesis (A. God is the Sovereign Creator of All that Exists (1))

The verb used for create (bārāʾ) is used in Scripture exclusively for the activity of God (see appendix 2). Humans may make (ʿāśâ), form (yāṣar), or build (bānâ); to the Hebrew, however, God creates.

English Standard Version Chapter 1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
