John 3:16–21 (ESV)
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Benjamin likes to put on dirty clothes.
Its disgusting.
Benjamin doesn’t care - because he’s a toddler. He is slowly learning how to control his emotions.
Benjamin does not know what is best for himself.
Ask me ask you a hard question — Do you know what is best for yourself?
Some here think yes — others no
There are times I fight that — BECAUSE I THINK I DO KNOW WHAT’S BEST FOR MYSELF
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
So outside of God — Is there even a HOPE for me to know what’s best for myself?
The clear answer is no. Because apart from God my works are evil- It is darkness
Without Christ - we are condemned
So then what’s the way to study and to see the right way to live?
How do we know then, the right way to conduct ourselves?
HOW DO WE WALK IN THE LIGHT?
If in my own power - I can’t know what’s best for me - then how are we to learn what’s best for ourselves?
Do you know why we study the Bible?
I mean, why do we study the same book every week?
There are a lot of other helpful books out there. Why don’t we change it up every once in a while?
Why the Bible??
Like we can see from the Bible that God spoke in multiple ways.
He spoke through people
He spoke himself
He leads people and guides people personally
So why can’t I just try and find God’s voice inside of myself and just listen to that?
Why can’t I find a someone that agrees with me and my emotions and only listen to them?
WHY IS THE BIBLE ALWAYS THE FOCUS?
This is so important - I need you to understand this.
If you can catch what I am about to say - it will save your life.
The Bible is the only fully trustworthy form of God’s Word is that is available for Study
It is God’s record of His Words and Covenant to us — that He commanded us to follow
2 Timothy 4:3–4 (ESV)
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
So when you come into contact with an idea that is contradictory to the Bible — YOU CAN KNOW IT IS FALSE.
Without the Bible — We are ONLY LEFT with making God in our own image and imagination
Without the Bible — we are only left with idolatry
It tells us about and points us to the Word of God as a person, namely Jesus Christ, whom we do not now have present in bodily form on earth.
Jesus is no longer discipling people. That is now the job of the Church.
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
So if you are teaching things contrary to the Bible — You are not leading them to Christ.
This is why we study the Bible
The other forms of the Word of God are not suitable as the primary basis for the study of theology.
It is most profitable for us to study God’s words as written in the Bible.
It is God’s written Word that he commands us to study.
The man is “blessed” who “meditates” on God’s law “day and night” Ps. 1:1–2
Psalm 1:1–2 (ESV)
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
God’s words to Joshua are also applicable to us: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” Josh. 1:8
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
It is the Word of God in the form of written Scripture that is “breathed out by God” and is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” 2 Tim. 3:16
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
This is why the Bible is the boundary for our belief.
