Running After Signs

John 6:1–7 ESV
1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”
Situation:
It was close to Passover.
It was getting to late Just to send them away.
Matthew 14:13–15 ESV
13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
Signs
They cam to see signs
Matthew 12:38–41 ESV
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
Money:
The money that would be needed would be needed would be 8 mo of wages.
Its humanly impossible.
Ill: I remember when I was younger the newest and great is what i wanted but the newest thing came out every couple mouths so there was no way I could keep up.
this is another way i tried filling my stomach. but it never was filled through these things.
Trans: in the moment of running we see people striving after the temporary signs over the eternal words of Jesus now lets see that Jesus wants our hearts through sitting.

Sitting an Enjoying

John 6:8–13 ESV
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.
Every time we see Andrew he is bringing people to Christ. How about us?
5 thousand = at least 10 thousand probably more Women and Children. Grand rapids 11 thousand
Sign:
The sign of Moses feeding the people in the wilderness
Why : Mark 6:34
Mark 6:34 ESV
34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.
He is the Shepherd:
Psalm 23:1–2 ESV
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Divine counting:
they had 5 loaves and 2 fish
they all ate until full
ended with 12 baskets
A large basket used by soldiers for their rations and equipment. It's about the size of a modern bushel measure, which is 18-27 gallons = 260-324 Gallons.

Some scholars try to explain away the miracle by saying that this was merely a sacramental or symbolic meal. Others say the “miracle” was in the people’s sharing. But these rationalizations are far from the clear meaning of John’s words.

Ill: The saying goes they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Here is a prime example of how much Jesus cared about these people
Trans: In the moment of running and sitting we see people in their now lets see that Jesus wants our hearts through Dragging.

Dragging For Their Wants

14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

John relates the miracle of feeding the multitude, for its reference to the following discourse. Observe the effect this miracle had upon the people. Even the common Jews expected the Messiah to come into the world, and to be a great Prophet. The Pharisees despised them as not knowing the law; but they knew most of Him who is the end of the law. Yet men may acknowledge Christ as that Prophet, and still turn a deaf ear to him.

They wanted him to be King but not King of their hearts
It was their stomach that moved them not their hearts
James 4:1–5 ESV
1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
Ill: The saying goes they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. That wasn't the case here. They didn’t care how much He knew but cared how much they could get.

Conclusion:

2 Peter 3:9–11 ESV
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
to day is the day for salvation to day
today is the day to Live a life that resembles Jesus.
