Scripture Reading

Hebrews 2:14–17 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Intro

Who hasn’t dreamed of receiving a giant inheritance from some long lost uncle?
Someone comes to your door and says, “Good news!” (Well for you not for him).
You’re uncle died and left you a large inheritance. A giant estate. All His wealth and riches.
We’ve all dreamed of what we would do if that were to happen.
But its never going to happen.
You know why?
If you want to receive an inheritance you must be part of the family.
No one gives their wealth, riches, and legacy to a stranger.
They give them to their heirs…their sons and daughters.
The same is true with God’s inheritance.
The sons and daughters of God will inherit the kingdom of God…eternal life…while those who are unrighteous, those who are children of the devil and slaves to their sin will not (1 Cor. 6:9).
Because according to the Bible there are two great families…one…the sons and daughters of God and the other…the children of the Devil…
And both families come with an inheritance…
The Children of God will receive the inheritance of eternal life…
The Children of the Devil eternal death…
And the thing that makes you an heir of one family or another depends on what you do with Jesus Christ.
That’s the Big Idea we come to today in John chapter 8.

By God’s grace in Christ we are Ransomed from our sin and Adopted as God’s own beloved sons and daughters to inherit the promise of Eternal life.

Unless you believe in Christ you will die in your sins only to receive an inheritance of eternal death.
And my hope for today is to see the glory of Christ and all that He saved us from…
And that when we we were slaves of sin and children of the devil destined only for wrath...
Christ died for us… adopted us…made us children of God so that by His perfect righteousness and faith in Him we would not die in our sins but become heirs of eternal life through a grace none of us deserved.
Let’s start with point number 1……

I. As Children of God we are Ransomed from Sin and Made Heirs of Eternal Life

John 8:31–33 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?
Earlier in verse 12, Jesus had said “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
And from that promise we are told many believed in Him (John 8:30).
But evidently they did not believe with genuine saving faith because when Jesus, who knows the hearts of men, calls them to true and genuine discipleship they push back and eventually pick up stones to stone Him (John 8:59).
And why John does this is because he wants us to see the difference between genuine and superficial faith.
To see examples like this and test ourselves to see whether or not we are truly in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5).

Slaves?

That’s where we get to verse 33…They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?
Now the Jews likely understood Jesus the way He was meant to be understood…as though He was speaking spiritually.
After all, their whole history was slavery.
Their beginning as a nation was out of slavery in Egypt in the Exodus, and then you had the Philistines in the book of Judges…
Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and at that very moment, Rome.
What the Jews are probably saying is “We aren’t slaves! We are the offspring of Abraham! We are part of God’s covenant people!”
We are not the ones in darkness…all the other nations are!
We have the Law…we have the Temple…we have the true worship of God.
We aren’t spiritually slaves…we are free! Free from sin and heirs of all God’s promises!
This is of course the natural response of the natural man.
The natural man hates the idea that they are enslaved to sin…under God’s condemnation and wrath.
But that’s exactly what Jesus says. Verse 34…
John 8:34–38 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
Now its important to remember, that when Jesus says practices, He is not saying everyone who commits a sin, although that may be true.
He is saying everyone who lives in sin…who serves sin.
Again, John clarifies this idea in his first epistle, 1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
While just two chapters later 1 John 3:8–9 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil…No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
This is the doctrine of Total Depravity, that the natural man, everyone outside of Christ is enslaved to sin and has no will or ability to choose anything but sin.
Even the quote “good things” we do are still sin because they are not done wholly for the glory of God and the love of our neighbor.

Slavery?

And as slaves we are under the dominion of sin doomed, as slaves, to suffer the consequences of our sin, and perish under God’s condemnation and wrath.
And this is important because to get the impact of this passage, we need a full understanding of what Jesus means by slavery.
Because its not just slavery as in…we commit a lot of sins and we keep committing a lot of sins.
It is that, but its also slavery as in we are condemned in our sin……bought and sold under our slavery to sin to suffer the condemnation of our sin under the holy and righteous wrath of God….Hell!
So when we talk about slavery to sin and being free from our sin in the Son the best way to understand what Jesus means is by what He said earlier…
John 8:24 Unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.
Unless you believe in me you will never be free from your slavery to sin and you will die under the wrath and condemnation of God!
So the slavery Jesus has in mind does include our actual sins, but it also includes the wrath and condemnation those sins deserve.
And that helps us understand verse 35…
The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.
Here’s the gist of where we are.
The Jews are basically saying, Jesus, what are you talking about?
We’re not slaves of sin! We’re not under God’s condemnation and wrath!
We’re sons of Abraham! We belong to the covenant people of God, and we are heirs of the life, salvation, and blessing God promised to Abraham!
In other words, the Jews basically assumed that because they were descendants Abraham they were automatically benefactors of that covenant.
That they were already saved would inherit the blessing of eternal life.
But Jesus says that’s not true.
The slave does not remain in the house forever.
Just because you are physically a son of Abraham that doesn’t mean you’re an heir of his house…an heir of the promise of blessing.
Just look at Ishmael!
Now this would have been horribly offensive to the Jews.
The Jews were descended from Abraham through Isaac, Abraham’s son through his wife Sarah.
And all of God’s covenants and promises were passed through that line, until eventually Christ came as the fulfillment of that promise that all the families of the earth would be blessed in Him (Genesis 12:3, Galatians 3:16).
But before Isaac, Abraham had another son…his name was Ishmael.
He was not the son of the promise, but was a son born of a slave woman when Abraham and Sarah grew impatient under God’s timing and plan.
And when Isaac came along, Sarah came to Abraham and said Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac. (Genesis 21:10).
And God affirmed this and said that’s what Abraham needed to do it was not Ishmael but through Isaac shall your offspring be named (Genesis 21:12).
Isaac would be the heir of the promise, and the slave, Ishmael, would be cast out.
And Jesus’ point was that while both were physically descended from Abraham, only one would receive the promise.
Physical birth alone didn’t make you a son…it didn’t guarantee salvation.
At best it makes you Ishmael, and unless you believe in me you will die in your sins (John 8:24).
Abraham believed God and it was counted to Him as righteousness (Galatians 3:6).
The true sons of Abraham, heirs of the promise, don’t just share his blood they share his faith.
Faith is what makes someone a true son of Abraham.
This is the consistent teaching of the New Testament.
Romans 9:6–8 Not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring
Well then who are?
Galatians 3:7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
Those that believe in Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
The ones who inherit the blessing of eternal life are those who share the faith of Abraham.
They are the heirs of the promise.
The slave…everyone dead in the condemnation of their sin…does not remain in the house forever.
Everyone dead in their sins will not inherit eternal life.
That’s Jesus’ main point. His Big Idea.
You Jews think you’re saved…free from God’s condemnation and wrath.
But you’re still slaves.
Abraham’s blood counts for nothing if you don’t share His faith.
I know you are the offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me.
You’re not true sons…you’re not heirs of the promise because if you were you would believe in me.
And as long as you are a slave to your sin, you will not remain in the house forever and inherit eternal life.
Only the son remains forever.
That’s why Jesus said in verse 36, So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
The only way to move from slave to a son is through faith in Jesus Christ.
He is the true Son that remains forever.
He was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15).
And when He went to the cross He laid down His life for us.
He paid for our sins and all our sins so now there is no condemnation, no slavery, for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
He gave His life to ransom us and rose again three days later to give us the blessing…the promised inheritance…of eternal life!
He died in our place for our sins to save us from the slavery and condemnation our sin.
And now…through faith in Him…we are no longer slaves who do not remain in the house forever…but we are adopted as beloved sons and daughters of God!
As Romans 8:17 says we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ
Heirs of God’s promise of eternal life!
Free indeed adopted as beloved sons daughters of God through the work of the perfect Son of God, Jesus Christ!
That is the good news of grace.
But the Jews lost, blind, and enslaved to their sin, could not and would not see it.
They refused to believe in Christ trust in Him.
And that takes us to point number 2 where Jesus doubles down and says you think your sons of God heirs of eternal life, but your sin and unbelief proves your not sons of God you are of your Father the Devil…

II. As Children of God we are Delivered from Satan and Adopted as Beloved Sons

John 8:39–41“They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works your father did.
This is in response to Jesus saying in verse 38, I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard form your father.
Starting to build towards this idea that because of their sin, the Jews have another father other than Abraham, and by extension have another Father than God.
But the Jews confidently affirm their ethnic heritage.
We are sons of Abraham! We are sons of the promise!
But Jesus said…
If Abraham was your Father you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.
What was Abraham famous for?
Believing God…Faith.
So Jesus’ point is what we just talked about in point number 1, if Abraham was your father, you would have the same faith Abraham did.
But you’re seeking to kill me…the One promised to Abraham.
You’re not sons of Abraham, you are doing the works of your father.
So the Jews responded…
They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.
This is a possible jab at Jesus, well you were “born of a virgin” you don’t even know who your father is.
Where ironically, because Jesus really was born of a virgin they basically acknowledge Jesus’ Father is God without even realizing it.
But more likely, they had in mind the Old Testament which compared idolatry and apostasy to sexual immorality and commanded the Jews to not intermarry among the nations lest they those nations turn their hearts after other gods…
So most likely, the Jews we were not born of sexual immorality!
We’re not idolators or apostates.
We are true Jews. The true and holy people of God!
We. Keep. The Law.
We have the Temple and true religion.
We are faithful to God!
So where before the Jews relied and depended to their ethnic heritage for their salvation…sons of Abraham, here they rely on their religion and good works.
Their keeping of the Law.
Both of these together were the grounds of their salvation.
So Jesus said to them, verse 42…
John 8:42–43 “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
Jesus basically says none of those things can save you.
Unless you believe in me you will die in your sins (John 8:24).
If God really was your Father you would love me…you would believe in me…you would trust in me and abide in my word.
Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
Here again we see our Total Depravity and slavery to sin.
Notice Jesus says you cannot bear my word as in you are not able to bear my word.
We are such slaves to sin that in and of ourselves we are spiritually unable to hear or understand or bear the good news of the gospel.
Left to ourselves we hate it.
1 Corinthians 2:14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
What this tells us is that our salvation does not depend on our works or theological knowledge—We have one Father—even God!
It does not depend on our family history—Abraham is our father!
No! All of our salvation depends solely on the grace of God!
And then Jesus gets to the heart of the matter.
You aren’t the sons of God you think you are.
You’re not sons of Abraham and heirs of eternal life.
You are of your father the devil, and by rejecting me the only inheritance you will receive is eternal wrath and condemnation.
John 8:44–45 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
Jesus’ aim is to confront the Jews with their sin.
To show that they really are slaves to sin.
As children of Satan their will is to do their father’s desires.
And Jesus highlights two of these specifically to make His point.
He was a murderer from the beginning.
Satan led Adam and Eve into sin and through that temptation brought the curse of death to the entire human race (Genesis 2:17, 3:1-7, Romans 5:12, 1 Corinthians 15:21-22).
Well the Jews at that very moment were seeking to murder Jesus.
And Satan is a liar and the father of lies who does not stand in the truth.
Satan’s lie, You will not surely die, is what led to the ruin of the whole human race.
Even now he continues to deceive people by blinding the minds of unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4).
And by rejecting the truth and not abiding or standing in the word of Christ, the Jews prove beyond a shadow of a doubt they are sons of the liar who reject the truth and align themselves with the Enemy of God.

Application

And here’s the uncomfortable truth as it applies to us today.
Whose son or daughter are you?
And that’s an important question because who your father is determines the inheritance you will receive.
The sons of God will inherit eternal life.
The sons of the devil eternal death.
We already saw how the children of God are only those who belong to Jesus Christ.
Everyone else is of their father the devil.
This is one of the most hard and difficult truths we can preach today.
Our world likes to say everyone is good.
That everyone is a child of God and loved by the Father.
Now there is a general sense that that’s true.
God created everyone and He loves everyone generally…He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.
But God has a particular love and saving love for the elect…those in Jesus Christ.
Everyone else is a child of satan and enemy of God enslaved to their sin carrying out their father’s desires.
Children of wrath doomed to suffer eternal condemnation for their sin.
And that was all of us. This is where we start to see the grace of Christ.
Paul says in…
Ephesians 2:1–3 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air [that’s Satan], the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience [that’s the children of Satan]— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Through our sin all of us made ourselves the spiritual children of the devil and aligned ourselves with him as enemies of God.
When Satan tempted Adam and Eve, he sowed doubt on God’s Word.
Did God actually say?
And He sowed doubt on God’s goodness…you shall not eat of any tree in the garden (Genesis 3:1).
That’s not what God had said.
Genesis 2:16 He said “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
God only prohibited the fruit of one tree.
But Satan came and twisted that message as the father of lies to make it look like God had prohibited every tree.
God is not wise. He is not Good. He doesn’t know or even want what’s best for you.
And we believed him.
We followed Satan’s lies, and in following him, gave him the throne of our hearts by following his word over God’s and aligning ourselves with him.
But then verse 4…
Ephesians 2:4–6 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
God did not leave us in our sins.
In His grace He sent His Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins and give us eternal life.
He gave His life as a ransom to save us from the slavery of our sin…
And in His death on the cross He crushed the head of the Serpent, Satan, the Devil, and delivered us from children of wrath…sons of disobedience and adopted us as beloved sons and daughters of God.
This is really what I wanted you to see today.
The grace God has given us in Christ.
Where we were once Slaves of Sin, children of the Devil unable to save ourselves, God has made us Free in Christ and adopted us as His own beloved sons and daughters.
We don’t often think about the plight and misery of our sin.
We were all bought and sold as slaves of sin and children of the devil doomed to die under the condemnation of God’s wrath as enemies aligned with Satan in rebellion against God.
Every single one of us was the slave who left to ourselves outside of God’s grace, would be cast out into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Do you know what God saved you from?
Slaves to sin.
Wholly inclined to evil in every faculty of our being, given over to the very lusts and passions of our flesh that destroy us.
Bound in chains unable and unwilling to choose or do any spiritual good.
None is righteous, no not one…no one seeks for God…no one does good…there is no fear of God before their eyes (Romans 3:10-17).
Every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (Genesis 6:5).
And Children of the Devil.
Forsaken sons of a murderer and the father of lies who were raised in iniquity to our own destruction.
Doomed to inherit condemnation and wrath.
That’s what God saved you from. Ransomed and Adopted.
And all because of the Perfect Son of God and His sacrifice and righteousness on our behalf.
And now because Him we are ransomed and adopted as sons of God who will, by God’s grace, remain in the house forever.
We are saved from the bondage of our sin and the tyranny of Satan to inherit all the promises and blessings of God.
But only if we put our faith in Jesus Christ.
And that’s point number 3…

III. The Only Way to be Ransomed and Adopted by God to Inherit Eternal Life is through Faith in Jesus Christ

John 8:46–47 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.
We could honestly spend a whole sermon on Which one of you convicts me of sin.
That’s a bold statement.
Who could say they have no sin?
No one. Only God.
And that’s the point.
Jesus is the Son of God incarnate in human flesh.
This is so important for our theology and what we are talking about today.
Why are we saved?
Why do we slaves and beggars get to be adopted as children of God and remain in the house forever?
The perfect righteousness of Christ.
All the blessings of God come to us through Him.
We are adopted in Christ.
We are saved in Christ.
We are loved in Christ.
We receive eternal life in Christ.
He is the whole of our salvation.
All the promises of God find their Yes in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20).
If none of the Jews could convict Him of sin, then why did none of the Jews listening to Him standing there…believe Him?
If I tell you the truth, why do you not believe me?
If I’m not lying, then what possible reason do you have for rejecting me?
For not believing in me for the salvation of your sins?
And the Jews standing there offered no response.
They didn’t have an answer. And so Jesus answered for them.
Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.
In other words, if you really were a son of God, you would believe in me.
But the very fact that you don’t proves that you are not of God, but of your father the devil, and as long as you go on rejecting me, you will die in your sins and not inherit the promise of eternal life.
What a terrifying predicament.
If you do not believe, according to Jesus, you are not of God.
You are a child of the devil doomed to be cast out of the house as a slave to your sin.
Whoever does not believe is condemned already.
Why will you die in your sins?
Come to Christ, believe in Him and be saved.
What this verse teaches is we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
If everyone since Adam is born dead in their sin.
If everyone by natural birth is born a son or daughter of the devil under the condemnation of their sin enslaved to their sin carrying out their father’s desires…
And the slave will not remain in the house forever but be cast out…
Then what must you do to be saved?
How do you become an heir of God’s house to inherit eternal life?
You need a new spiritual birth.
You must be born again from above (John 3:7).
To become one of God’s children and an heir of eternal life you must be born of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Look at…
John 1:12–13 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
The new birth is a work of God’s sovereign grace.
Look what it says.
He gave the right to become children of God who were born, not blood.
Meaning not from your family heritage or where you come from.
We saw this with the Jews.
We are sons of Abraham!
It is personal faith in Jesus Christ.
Coming from a Christian family, growing up in a Christian church doesn’t save you.
You need a personal faith in Jesus Christ.
Nor the will of the flesh.
Meaning not out of any human effort or exertion.
Not by works.
We saw this with the Jews as will.
We have one Father—even God!
We keep the Law. We have the Temple and True Religion.
And Jesus says that doesn’t save you.
We are saved by grace, not by works lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Nor of the will of man.
Meaning not our own will or choosing.
We are slaves to sin.
We have no will or ability in ourselves to choose any spiritual good or move even one inch towards God because our wicked hearts are only evil continually.
Our will is to do our father’s desires.
We are so utterly lost…dead…and enslaved in our sins… so hostile to God in our lusts and desires that we are absolutely unwilling and unable to come to Christ by our own power or desire.
Left to ourselves we would never come.
Like Jesus said you cannot bear to hear my word…the reason you do not hear…is [because] you are not of God. (John 8:43, 47).
Spiritual inability.
We have stopped up our ears with our love for sin.
But that’s the good news of the last three words…
But of God
With those three little words all human initiative, merit, or possibility is completely ruled out.
Being born again is being born from above…a miracle of God’s sovereign work and grace…He made us alive together with Him.
He overcomes all of our sin, all of our darkness, and all of our hatred of Him allegiance to Satan and natural birth, and saves us in Christ by His Sovereign, Powerful, Infinitely Glorious grace.
Grace alone, faith alone, Christ alone.
And in Christ…He gave the right to become children of God.
Adoption and heirs.
Heirs of God and fellow Heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).
Sons and daughters who remain in the house and receive the promise of eternal life!
If the Son sets you free you will be free indeed!

Non Christian

The only way to be free is to be born again!
Everyone who rejects Christ will remain a slave to their sin and child of the devil with the only thing to inherit being the wrath and condemnation of God.
But you said I can’t do it!
I have to be born again from above!
If I can’t make myself born again then what hope do I have?
And that’s precisely the point!
The only hope you have is God’s grace.
Run to Christ. Believe in Him.
Pray God, be merciful to me a sinner.
I can’t save myself. I’m a slave of sin, child of the devil doomed to die under condemnation and wrath.
Will you please save me…you’re my only hope.
And see if God will not save you in Christ…
Jesus said All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out (John 6:37).
He will give you the right to become a child of God and adopt you as a beloved son or daughter of God!
And as we’ve been saying this whole sermon…the son remains in the house forever and will receive the promise of eternal life.

Christian

For the Christian, this passage highlights for us two things.

Grace

Number 1…The great sin we had in making ourselves children of the devil by our sin and the great grace of God to save us out of that family of the damned and adopt us into his family of eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ.
We were slaves of sin and children of the devil.
Far from God and without hope in the world.
Nowhere to look and nowhere to go to save ourselves.
Languishing in our slavery to sin and tyranny of the devil.
But God in His mercy and grace saved us.

Christ

Number 2…it also highlights the victory of Christ as the perfect Son who never sinned and resisted all the temptations of the devil.
He crushed the head of the serpent…(Genesis 3:15).
He destroyed the works of the devil…(1 John 3:8).
By His death…He destroyed the one who has the power of death and set us free (Hebrews 2:14-15).
As slaves of sin and children of the devil, we had no hope or ability to save ourselves.
We were bound in chains and Lost in darkness.
Enemies of God aligned with Satan in rebellion against our Creator.
But Christ set the captives free.
He loosed our chains by His almighty power.
He perfectly obeyed God’s Law on our behalf.
He laid down His life and bore the punishment our sins deserve.
And now through faith in God’s perfect Son and by His perfect sacrifice and righteousness…
We are set free, adopted, heirs of eternal life, and beloved sons who God promises will remain in God’s house forever.
