Power and Authority in Himself

14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

There are 2 Gk words for power:
Exsousia = Authroity, dominion, Power to act, in charge
Dunamis = dynamite, dynamo = strength, energy, power to produce life.
The word in v. 14 is dunamis. meaning empowered by the Spirit, Jesus was prepared to begin His ministry!
In verse 36 states that Jesus acted with exsousia and dunamis. Jesus is seen as having authority and power to do amazing, awesome things!
So Jesus is walking in the strength and authority of the Father and the Spirit! (remember at His baptism)

The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,

Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives

And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

Jesus is declaring His purpose in Power and Authority! “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Power and Authority to Transform Lives

Transform our thinking!

Blessed are you poor,

For yours is the kingdom of God.

21 Blessed are you who hunger now,

For you shall be filled.

wBlessed are you who weep now,

For you shall laugh.

22 Blessed are you when men hate you,

And when they exclude you,

And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,

For the Son of Man’s sake.

23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!

For indeed your reward is great in heaven,

For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.

Transform our living!

27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus has the Power and Authority to Transform our lives to be a witness for Him!
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
To be a witness for Jesus is not about knowing the Roman Road, or the Steps to peace with God or the Four Spiritual Laws but a Transformed life that lives out the transformation of walking in the Power and Authority of Jesus!
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

Challenge for Living!

Jesus has ultimate power and authority over demons, disease, and creation. He calls us to relinquish to him any illusory power or authority we think we have over our lives. What difference would it make for you to give all power and authority to Jesus in every area of your life? How would you live differently?
How does trusting the authority and power of Jesus help you approach hardships, difficulties, and life’s unexpected moments?
