Introduction

Good morning church. I come before you in humility and in obedience of our Father to share with you the word given by the Lord and I must say it was His prodding that moved me to focus on His message for us. There are some people who represent the worse of humanity. We may reflect our lives recognizing the errors in judgment that we have made and the people that may have been hurt from our evil ways. I say evil manly because anything that we do in disobedience to God is evil and disrespectful.
I propose to you that there is a need to reset our relationship when we are in the wrong relationship with God and with others.
According to Howard Thurman, It may be argued that a man who places so high a price upon physical existence and survival that he is willing to perjure his own soul has a false, or at least an inadequate, sense of values. “What shall a man give in exchange for his own soul?” Jesus asks.

The Offense

We will find the nature of the offense in 2 Samuel 11:2-5
2 Samuel 11:2–5 ESV
It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
David has made a mess in his life and tries to cover up the mess by sending for Uriah who was on the battlefield where David should have been. Uriah returns and David figures that Uriah would lay with his wife but that did not happen. David tried to keep this sin under wraps but the only way to make this cover-up work was Uriah had to die on the battlefield. It was a plot to kill Uriah and after his death David would take Bathsheba to care for because of her husbands death thus in an attempt to cover the pregnancy. Everyone would believe that the child was Uriah’s. But you can’t hide nothing from God.
God was displeased with David and tells Nathan the prophet to make David accountable.
David has been notified that God has observed his sin. The rebuke is located in 2 Samuel 12:1 -9 where Nathan the prophet is instructed to inform David of his adultery and murder of Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah.

Davids Confession Sin will blind you and blot out the spirit of God. Until you recognize your transgressions.

Psalm 51:1“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.”
`Now that David’s sin has been exposed he now seeks mercy and pleas to God, reminding Him of His steadfast love and abundant mercy. The Hebrew word he’sed meaning obligation to the community in relation to relatives, friends, guests, master & servants, &c. unity, solidarity, loyalty

Recognize

Psalm 51:1–2 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!”
Recognize you sin, your transgression against God.
Recognize where you are mentally, physically and spiritually. There are times that our life circumstances can allow our guard to fall. When these issues come we tend to run in every direction except to God. Many people run to the wrong spirit, the liquor bottle or some other form of stimulant that will relieve the pain or guilt of our actions or predicament.

Examination

Psalm 51:3–6 “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”
It is best to examine ones self honestly and not try to rationalize the sin.
Nathan was Davids accountability partner in sort of a way. We need to be called out for our sin and held accountable. Nathan was instructed by God to bring accountability to David the King. No one is above the law, not then and not now.
David was one who examined himself by stating the he sinned against God and Him only . Self reflection is good for improving self awareness and allows greater control of your life.
2 Samuel 12:13 ESV
David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.

Surrender

When David spoke of God’s cleansing him with hyssop, he was alluding to the use of hyssop at the religious ceremonies to sprinkle sacrificial blood on the altar. This represented the removal of sin through the shedding of blood

Surrendering to God is placing your sins on the altar so that you may be cleaned from the sacrifice of your heart. A contrite spirit Psalm 51:17
David made promises to God in return for His forgiveness
English Standard Version (Psalm 51)
7  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8  Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
9  Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
10  Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.

Evaluate

11  Cast me not away from your presence,

and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

12  Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Where are you now, are you in a right relationship with God? David knew that he deserved death because when Nathan shared the story with him, David said the person should be put to death. David sentenced himself to die, but God heard his cry and forgave his iniquity.

Teach

Then I will teach transgressors your ways,

and sinners will return to you.

14  Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,

O God of my salvation,

and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

This is our testimony and also doing. Others learn how to avoid the pitfalls that we have experienced. David will still have to suffer the consequences of his sin, He just did not die. Yet after this event he experienced sorrow form his family. his sons Absolom

The Way to Salvation

Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
All because of Jesus do we have the blessing of forgiveness of sin even though we have already been delivered we still have transgressions. But Jesus is faithful.
This is how we reset by keeping our relationship with God in tact.
