Class six - Man, His need: Propitiation 2/27/24
Vocabulary words:
Propitiation
Wrath
Memory verses:
Rom5:8-9
1Jn4:9

Intro:

* God is God
* God does not allow, accept sin, judges sin in harsh manner (Rom6:23) Another word for the judgment is the wrath of God.
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
* God provides a way for His mercy and forgiveness to be given, the propitiation of sin through the man Jesus Christ.
Aim:
* To look at the definition, and the use of the word propitiation in the scripture (Rom3:25; Heb2:17; 1Jn2:2, 4:10)
Romans 3:25 NASB95
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
Hebrews 2:17 NASB95
17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
1 John 2:2 NASB95
2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
* To come to understanding that propitiation is needed because of God’s righteous judgment against sin (Rom11:22). God’s wrath stresses the seriousness of sin, and where there is sin, there is wrath, there is judgment.
Romans 11:22 NASB95
22 Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

Outline

The wrath of God
* As mentioned, propitiation is needed because of God’s righteous judgment against sin.
* God’s wrath is real as shown in scripture
* 1Cor10:5-11 This is what they did to be due God’s wrath
* Heb10:30-31, 12:29 - This is what would come
* Rev14:18-20, 16:19, 19:15 - This is a description of God’s wrath
* The wrath of God is righteous
* Rom1:18, 2:1-16 (focus v.5) - demonstrated
Romans 2:5 NASB95
5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
* RE16:5-7 - even the angels acknowledge Gods righteous judgment.
Revelation 16:5–7 NASB95
5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “Righteous are You, who are and who were, O Holy One, because You judged these things; 6 for they poured out the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink. They deserve it.” 7 And I heard the altar saying, “Yes, O Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.”
* To understand and appreciate propitiation we first must understand, take seriously the wrath of God.
* Jn3:36 - those who do not believe (and obey) the Son the wrath of God abides
John 3:36 NASB95
36 “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
* Eph5:6 (ref only)- God’s wrath comes on the son’s of disobedience so don’t be deceived
* Rom2:5, 3:5; 5:9; 1Th1:10 (ref only these)
* sinful man storing up wrath
* God’s wrath is righteous
* So, be saved from it, for
* Jesus rescues man from it.
* God’s righteous wrath is not fitful anger, irrational, uncontrollable or unknowable. He had made it known.
* It is settled opposition against all things wicked, sinful, false, evil
* It is a reaction of this holy nature on sin wherever it is found. Including on the sin bearer Jesus Christ (2Cor5:21, 1Pt2:21-25)
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
then
1 Peter 2:21–25 NASB95
21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
* His wrath is a reprove, a discipline so sinful man would repent, for He is an all consuming fire (Ref these only Rev3:19; Heb12:29)
* God’s wrath, biblically summarized
* God’s nature involved wrath
* God’s wrath is real and a serious action by God against sin
* God’s wrath can be averted by God’s own provision (Jesus Christ) as the propitiation
* Propitiation is that means provided by God whereas man can be saved from the wrath to come.
* This is nothing that man can do to appease God’s wrath
* It is God’s provision only and acceptance of His provision
The propitiation of God
* Rom3:21-26- A reminder that God set forth the plan, the way, Jesus Christ to be the propitiation
Romans 3:21–26 NASB95
21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
* Rom3:9, 19 - all under sin, all under judgment of God
Romans 3:9 NASB95
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
Romans 3:19 NASB95
19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
* By His blood we are cleaned, the propitiation is made
* Rom8:1 - by His propitiation we are no longer under condemnation, wrath of God, we are justified!
Romans 8:1 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
* Christ gave Himself for us (Gal2:20); He became sin (ref only: 2Cor5:21); bore our sins (1Pt2:24) all we that we by His propitiation become the righteousness of God!
Galatians 2:20 NASB95
20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
then
1 Peter 2:24 NASB95
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
* So we can claim redemption, no longer separated (Isa59:2); no longer enemies, far from God (ref only: Eph2:12-13); but friends (ref only: Rom5:1-11) who are now have peace with God!
* Jesus is our propitiation (ref only: Heb2:17)
* The satisfaction, the payment offered for offences, crimes, transgressions (sin)
* The offence is sin, the offender is the sinner
* Jesus paid the price, for the offence!
* Jesus whom all authority given (ref only:Mt28:18) gave us a pardon for our sin.
* He was the offering and the priest who made the offering on our behalf (Heb9:28)
Hebrews 9:28 NASB95
28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
* Jesus is man’s mediator between man and God as our propitiation (1Jn2:2, 4:9-10)
1 John 2:2 NASB95
2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
then
1 John 4:9–10 NASB95
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
* Jesus Christ is the Righteous One and paid the price for all who will believe
* God loved and sent the Son to be the acceptable sacrifice for our disobedience
Conclusion
* What propitiation accomplished
* Made way for our sins to be forgiven and make peace with God so we can become the righteousness of God
* Able to reckon the penitent sinners righteous through obedient faith in accepting God’s gift
* Sinners redeemed, justified, reconciled, reborn, restored and saved from the wrath of God to come.
* Without the propitiation
* God’s righteous wrath will be poured out in all its fury and painful, eternal consequences
* Without accepting Christs gift, then you will receive God’s wrath
* A great verse to remember (Rom5:8-9; also 1Jn4:9)
Romans 5:8–9 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
and then
1 John 4:9 NASB95
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.
* While we were yet sinners Christ died for us
* So by His death we might live through Him!
