Doctrine of Marriage

Much of the time, political commentators wonder why conservatives and evangelicals are so concerned about marriage.
As a matter of fact, often more liberal “Christians” or more liberal denominations wonder the same thing.
The answer to that question is one of the simplest of all theological arguments...

The Church Should Hold Close What God Holds Close!

1. Why does the church hold marriage as such an important thing?
On the sixth day, God created man & woman. (Gen. 1:27-28)
He created woman so that man was not alone and he had a helper “fit for him.” (Gen. 2:18-24)
Genesis 2:18–24 (ESV)
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Woman was made in the image of God, but as a companion and helper for man.
Yet, God created them to come together and be united as one flesh.
So we begin with God creating marriage as between Man & WomanMale & Female.
2. Why does marriage hold significance with God/in His Word?
God established marriage. (Gen. 2:18, 24)
God joins the couple together. (Mark 10:9; Matt. 19:4-6)
God pictures the marriage as a symbol of His relationship with the church.
2 Corinthians 11:2 (ESV)
2 For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
Ephesians 5:22–24 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
3. How does marriage reflect Christ and His bride, the church?
Ephesians 5:23 ESV
23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
God gave us a picture of paralleled connectivity.
“God made Adam and Eve in such a way that they would share love and communication and mutual giving of honor to one another in their interpersonal relationship.” — Wayne Grudem
Notice how we might compare this to the relationship within the Trinity.
Genesis 1:26 (ESV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...”
4. How is man to honor God in His marriage and what dishonors God?
“When husbands begin to act selfish, harsh, domineering,or even abusive and cruel ways, they should realize that this a result of sin...”
“…as a result of the fall, and is destructive and contrary to God’s purposes for them. To act this way will bring great destructiveness in their lives and marriages.”
Man is to honor God in His marriage as seeing it as an example of Christ and the church.
The N.T. commands husbands to love their wives…sacrificially.
Ephesians 5:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 5:25 (ESV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
5. How is woman to honor God in Her marriage and what dishonors God?
“Similarly, when wives feel rebellious, resentful of their husband’s leadership in the family, or when they compete with their husbands for leadership in the family, they should realize that this is a result of sin, a result of the fall.”
Ephesians 5:22 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
Genesis 3:16 ESV
16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
Both husband and wife are given a role that requires love, honor, and submission.
6. Should a church do a marriage for people of the same birth sex?
In short, NO!
In the long of it, we must give the reason why we say “no.”
If God created marriage between man and woman for the purpose of procreation and God calls homosexuality sin, then we must affirm the Biblical stance.
Romans 1:24–27 ESV
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Genesis 1:27–28 (ESV)
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (ESV)
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,
10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:18–20 ESV
18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
