The original audience were into Judaism

They were aware of the prophets believed God spoke to men

Here is why I think Reason why this letter is written

People coming out of Judaism had a lack of confidence in the finished work of Christ

Converts were inclined to go back to the way the used to do things

people lack confidence in the salvation, the miracles, the resurrection and the forgiveness of sin

I want to show using this text in this Book of Hebrews that Jesus is Better, far more superior and greater than whatever or whoever came before.

Jesus is Greater because he Pre-Existed his Incarnation

Psalm 102:25 (NASB 2020)

The bible teaches in many different places that Jesus existed before his incarnation and is in fact who he said he is

Jesus is Greater because of the Fathers testimony of who he is

by denying the Virgin Birth they deny his deity and are downplaying the what the father is saying about the son

6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.”

Firstborn - means preeminence , first place or first in Rank

These are all the most high’s testimony

Raising Christ from the grave is the ultimate endorsement from the most high God

Jesus is Greater because of what he accomplished

Hebrews 1:3c “upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”

The Most obvious thing Jesus accomplished is the purification of our sins

That’s why he said it is finished

IF IUIC is RIGHT what would that mean?

It would mean that Jesus death on the cross could not have done anything

It would mean that Jesus wasn’t the promised messiah

The Messiah

Rejected and despised: Isaiah 53 “He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him. 4 However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself bore, And our pains that He carried; Yet we ourselves assumed that He had been afflicted, Struck down by God, and humiliated.

Had to be born of a Virgin Isaiah 7:14 “the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel.”

Had to be a descendant of David Ezekiel 37:24; 25-27 “And My servant David will be king over them,”

The Messiah had to be both King and Priest Psalm 110 “A Psalm of David”

Hebrews 1:8–9 NASB 2020

8 But regarding the Son He says, “Your throne, God, is forever and ever, And the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of His kingdom. 9 “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your companions.”

King:

verse 8 is a Psalm 110:2 allusion saying Jesus has rule and authority like a King would

a scepter is a symbol of royalty and authority

What does a king do?

A King rules and has authority

Priest:

Hebrews 5:5–6 NASB 2020

5 So too Christ did not glorify Himself in becoming a high priest, but it was He who said to Him, “You are My Son, Today I have fathered You”; 6 just as He also says in another passage, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

Psalm 110:4 is an allusion

What does a priest do?

The high priest mediates and makes sacrifices for sin

So Christ fulfills every prophecy concerning the Messiah, the only one who could purify us from our sin.

Summarize

Jesus is Greater Because

Because he is Eternal

He is Greater Because the most high raised him from the dead

He’s Greater Because he accomplished God’s redemptive plan and did not have to do so

Reflection

What the book Of Hebrews said about Jesus, the prophets the disciples and Paul are great

nothing compares nothing is more validation than the fact that he rose from the grave

No other world religion can say that

Therefore Jesus is trustworthy and dependable

we can rest in the finished work of the cross

Words of Encouragement

I want to encourage everyone

but to know what you believe and why you believe it

not to really study these Hebrew Israelite Camps or other groups or religions

you may not ever run into a Hebrew Israelite, you may run away and avoid Jehovah Witnesses

but these heretical ideas are floating around enough that you may run into

a coworker, someone at the beauty salon barbershop asking you why do you believe in the Virgin Birth or

why are you even a christian? don’t you know that is a white man’s religion?

1 Peter 3:15 “15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect;”
