Do any of y’all remember those Geico commercials that would say “so easy a cave man could do it”? Then there’d be a cave man there that would get upset and storm off. I think I saw that they are bringing the cave man back for a Super Bowl commercial.

The reason these ads were effective, besides being funny, is because people like easy! Easy isn’t always the best thing for us. If everything is always easy then we don’t get stretched and we don’t grow, so we need difficult things.
But this passage tonight is so easy a cave man could understand it! Paul gives us a very straight forward list that we can look at and then look at ourselves and ask, “where am I at?”
read and pray
All Christians should be above reproach. Church leaders must be above reproach.
“This says qualifications for elders. That’s not me, this is for you. Why should I worry about this?” Fair question! Here’s why.
These are the qualifications for church leaders because this is how all Christians are called to live, so church leaders, as examples and leaders for those God has placed under their care, must be these things! So if the church leaders are to be examples for others in these things, then this passage is for all of us!
Above reproach
1 John 3:9 ESV
No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Love their families

Football players, do y’all have spring practice going on right now? Why are you practicing already, it’s not football season yet? Anyone taking an intro to business class or marketing class or anything like that? Do you have a job? Why are you taking it then? It’s normal to educate yourself ahead of time so you are prepared for the time. This is why it is important for y’all to hear what the Bible says about marriage and parenting and church leadership.
Proverbs 6:32 ESV
He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.
Proverbs 22:6 ESV
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Colossians 3:20 ESV
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

Must not be…

Have y’all seen the guy with the ick list on TikTok? This is like Paul’s ick list for church leaders.
Arrogant
Proverbs 11:2 ESV
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
Quick tempered
Proverbs 29:22 ESV
A man of wrath stirs up strife, and one given to anger causes much transgression.
A drunkard
Proverbs 20:1 ESV
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
Violent
Proverbs 3:31–32 ESV
Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, for the devious person is an abomination to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence.
Greedy
Proverbs 1:19 ESV
Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors.

Must be…

What’s the opposite of an ick?
Hospitable
Proverbs 11:17 ESV
A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.
Good
Proverbs 12:2 ESV
A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of evil devices he condemns.
Self-controlled
Proverbs 16:32 ESV
Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Upright and holy
Proverbs 14:2 ESV
Whoever walks in uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is devious in his ways despises him.
Disciplined
Proverbs 12:1 ESV
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Hold firmly to biblical teaching
Psalm 19:7 ESV
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
The most foundational and non-negotiable doctrine we have as Christians is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to seek and to save the lost and there is no other name under Heaven by which we must be saved.
None of us can keep the dos and don’ts on these lists like we’re called to because we’re sinners…
