“Charles Templeton”
Around 1949 a well known evangelist was just beginning his ministry that would catapult him onto a world wide platform… his name was Billy Graham. However around this time was an even more gifted speaker, one who was winning souls to Christ on an even more impressive rate and level… it was Billy’s friend and coworker in ministry Charles Templeton. It was around this time that the two would soon take different paths.
Charles would slowly move towards being a staunch atheist
While Billy would continue to boldly and powerfully proclaim the message of Jesus Christ
Fast forward to about the year 2000 we see Lee Strobel, an atheist who discovered Jesus Christ is now a renowned Christian Apologist!
Here is his final part of his interview with Charles Templeton… (“The Case For Faith”, by Lee Strobel pgs 17-18)
As we look at these books of history in the NT we discover:
Many facts concerning this Jesus
His teachings go against the flow of culture
A man who loved, taught Truth, Died and even rose again!!!
But as we look at these books with all their detail and information, we too can know the man Jesus and “MISS HIM” as the very Son of God and our Savior!
Church do not miss Him! Luke begins this book of Luke and Acts with a compelling greeting that should spur us to know Jesus deeper… Luke 1:1-4 & Acts 1:1
Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.
The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach,
Who Is Luke?
Who Is Luke?
This is a GENTILE man worth knowing and looking into… a dear brother in Christ
We also know that he was a physician and a gentile in spirit
He was a gifted writer, well educated, scholars have often raved about his incredible use of Greek
Greek is the language the NT was written in
There are 7957 verses in the NT
Luke and Acts comprise 2158 of those verses!
that means that this man wrote over 28% of the New Testament! (1/3)!!!
We know he partnered with Paul on his missionary journeys
Luke had a passion for the Gospel…
The message and teaching of Jesus Christ as the Son of God… Promised Messiah! 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Luke also has the desire for the gospel to be CLEAR… DETAILED, AND DELIVERED IN A CONSECUTIVE MANNER.
He presents his gospel narrative for both Jew and Gentile and he focuses on the poor and oppressed having this same opportunity!
Luke 19:10 (theme of his gospel...)
“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
THE LOST…DOES NOT PREFERENCE
rich or poor
young or old
male or female
slave or free
Luke… The Apologist of His Time!
Luke… The Apologist of His Time!
Apologetics: The word apologetics does not mean to say you’re sorry. Instead, it refers to the defense of what you believe to be true. McDowell, J., & McDowell, S. (2017). Evidence that demands a verdict: life-changing truth for a skeptical world. Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
Peter challenges the believer to do this in 1 Peter 3:15
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Charles Colson “Christian faith is not an irrational leap. Examined objectively, the claims of the Bible are rational propositions well supported by reason and evidence.”
We give an account by going to the very Word of God!
Luke did his homework… written around 60-61 AD (less than 30 years after Christ resurrection!)
There were “many” out there who had seen, heard, knew, about Christ and all the events we see!
“Compiled an account” now we have all of these in a written document!
Oral telling of events was how things were taught and passed down
Luke wanted to preserve this and have it available for Jew and Gentile
Luke and Acts are also in consecutive order…(Historical books of the NT)
Luke himself “investigates everything carefully”
In other words, it verified… go check the facts yourself!
Possibly even spoke with Mary and other family members
He went all the way to the beginning, spoke to multiple eyewitnesses, traveled, researched, investigated…a great deal of work!
WHY? Why go to such effort?
WHY? Why go to such effort?
Luke 1:4 gives us this answer...
so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.
Luke Overview
Luke Overview
Luke lays out this truth for us in a CONSECUTIVE MANNER… a road-map sort of.
Each mile marker revealing something to us about this PERFECT MAN … JESUS!
Luke stops along the way to illustrate for us through his detailed research concerning this Jesus!
As we travel through his gospel we will “know the truth”
BIRTH NARRATIVE
Luke describes the birth narrative including John the baptist in the greatest detail
There are recorded for us 4 Hymns sung as part of this narrative
Before we get to his youthful years Luke dives into the genealogy of Jesus
GENEALOGY
Unlike Matthew who starts with Abraham (the promise blessing) and works his way toward Mary
Luke starts with Joseph and makes his way backwards all the way to Adam
Luke is demonstrating Jesus’s humanity…
He takes us back to the fall, failure, Adam’s sin
He shows us Adam so we remember the SIN and the PROMISE
ONE greater, stronger, will come and CRUSH the serpent's head!!!
Contrast of Adams
Contrast of Adams
where the first Adam sinned
The Second Adam NEVER SINNED
Where the first Adam was tempted and failed
The Second Adam was tempted by Satan and came through VICTORIOUS “it is written”
Where the first Adam failed to obey God in the garden
The Second Adam finds VICTORY declaring “not my will but Your’s be done”
The first Adam brought sin to ALL mankind
The Second Adam BORE mankind’s sin at Calvary
The first Adam was from the earth...
The Second Adam was from Heaven… God’s only Son
The first Adam we find Self-Centered
The Second Adam we see Him as SELF-LESS!!!
The Second Adam… Jesus Christ, Fully God, Fully man…
The Perfect Man
The Perfect Man
Luke travels through His youth, His baptism, His Temptation, and how He was SEEKING SINNERS...
Jesus would heal disease
Jesus would care for the poor, outcast, forgotten, AND SINNERS!!!
Many would hear and follow Jesus BUT… the more He taught, the more people began to turn away (U-TURN)
SEEKING
Luke 15:1-7 describes His seeking well…
Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him. Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” So He told them this parable, saying, “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? “When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. “And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ “I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
Later in chapter 19 we are told of Zacheus who was a tax collector and upon his believing in Jesus, Christ declares… Luke 19:10
“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
In seeking sinners, the Son of God the perfect Man would extend a New Covenant…
The New Covenant
The New Covenant
As Jesus would celebrate Passover with His disciples He would take THE BREAD and THE CUP… Luke 22:19-20
And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
Sinful Man Rejects The Perfect Man
Sinful Man Rejects The Perfect Man
Jesus was perfect yet REJECTED...
Pilate found no guilt… Luke 23:22-25
And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.
The Perfect One took the place of the sinner
Even on the cross… Jesus seeks sinners (those who deserved) … Luke 23:39-43
One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
The Son of Man had come… He continues to seek the lost, He did the work of Salvation at Calvary as He died…
In a true apologist manner Luke:
Demonstrates His death & burial
Illustrates His powerful Resurrection
and he records in his closing verses a CONVERSATION… the road to Emmaus!
Jesus points them to the SCRIPTURES!!!
Engage, use your minds, think through these things! Discover Jesus Christ the author and perfecter of our faith… and Do NOT Miss Him! HE IS FAR MORE THAN PERFECT MAN… HE IS THE SON OF GOD… OUR SAVIOR!!!
