Introduction

Background

To fully understand the text read we must understand what is going on in the background. We find the protagonist of our text, an Apostle and Disciple by the name of Paul. Paul and his partner Barnabus are on their first missionary journey. According to Acts 13:1-3, the Holy Spirit told the teachers and Prophets that were there at Antioch, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” They weren’t called by anyone but God.
–-One of the issues we find in the church world today is so many people want to be in the front or the head, to the point that they are willing to find someone that will make them what THEY want to be, or even will go and make themselves something. One day you preach your initial sermon and the next, you are an Bishop, Apostle, Prophet or some other title, but it was our Lord that said in Matthew 23:12, “and whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Tell somebody, wait on the Lord!!!
Paul and Barnabas have traveled fulfilling the commission of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But while he is traveling he finds himself having some bumps in the road. Is there anyone here who knows what it is like to have some bumps in the road, to have some turbulence, some rough places? When the doctor gives you a bad report, that’s a bump in the road. When your family seems to be falling apart, that is a bump in the road. When the Church puts more energy in division than in unity, that is a bump in the road. When you go to preach on Sunday morning, and you see more empty places than seats filled, that’s a bump in the road. Child of God, we are going to have to deal with some bumps in the road. I know it doesn't feel good, I know it doesn't look good, I know you don’t like it, but Child of God, we have to have some bumps in the road. Paul and Barnabas had to deal with some bumps while doing the work that he set them apart for. Their bumps were that everywhere they went they found opposition. When they traveled Cyprus there was opposition from a sorcerer by the name of Barjesus, when they went to Antioch of Pisidia he found opposition from Jews, when he went Iconium he found opposition from an unbelieving Jew who stirred up the gentiles. When you are on an assignment from God, you must be prepared for opposition. Yes, child of God, there will be opposition. Opposition is defined as resistance or dissent, expressed in action or argument. When you are on assignment there is going to be something trying to push you back. Paul had opposition and Child of God, you are going to have opposition.
Paul finds opposition in Iconium and because he preached with power and boldness there were some folk who believed what they were saying. Can I help somebody, can I help some Pastor, if you preach with boldness and power, I guarantee you somebody will listen. Throw your agenda out the way, and just preach Jesus and him crucified with Power and Boldness and someone will come, declaring what must I do to be saved. Paul said it in Romans 10:14, How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Verse 17 says “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Don’t worry about who likes it or do not like it, JUST PREACH THE WORD and somebody will believe. But just as there were people who believed what he was saying, there was also people who did not believe.
—Can I help somebody today? We’re not going to get everybody. Everybody is not going to come over here, everybody is not going to join up. There is going to be some folk who down right runs your name in the mud, but I wish I had a few Disciples that know that one monkey don’t stop no show. I don’t care what happens, if God be for you, WHO can stand against you.
The Bible says that Paul and Barnabas what at iconium and the unbelieving Jews stirred up the people and the ESV say poisoned their minds against the brothers. I don’t have time to deal with all that but I just want to let you know you can’t give everyone space in your ear because some people’s voices are poison. And when you take time to listen, it will poison your mind.
