Introduction
Since the last Sunday night lesson was weeks ago, recap what we talked about (Worldly identity leads to brokeness)
Why is identity important?
What are some things that make up your identity? (Hobbies, Character qualities, etc)
What does the bible say about our identity?
Ask two volunteers to read Galatians 2:20 and 2 Corinthians 5:17!
20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!
What does this passage mean when it ways, “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”?
It means that in Christ we are a new creation!
It means that when Christ becomes our Lord our identity becomes him!
What are some things that take Christ’s spot as our identity?
But the things we do shouldn’t shape our identity. The “one thing” that should shape our identity—the one thing we really need—is Jesus. Ultimately, it’s the desire to know Him and serve Him that should shape our lives.
John D. Barry
According to Barry, knowing and serving Jesus should shape our lives.
When we spend time with God, we become more like Jesus and he becomes even more of our identity.
Why is it important to spend time with God?
What are some ways we can do that?
Spend time in the Word
Spend time in prayer
Talk about God and seek deeper understanding
Share the gospel
Regularly attend and serve in church
Let’s talk about some of the things you mentioned make up your identity:
Music - It’s a great platform you can use to share with others that Christ is your identity. Music is a wonderful way to help prepare peoples hearts to worship the Lord.
Sports - Being an athlete is another great platform you can use for God’s glory, from leading pregame prayer, to acting different than the others in the locker room, to even starting a team bible study, you can use that platform for Jesus glory!
Other clubs - God has gifted us all in different ways to work together for his glory as one body. Just because you don’t play sports or instruments, doesn’t mean you can’t make an impact for Jesus. God has placed you right where he wants you to glorify him.
Church - being actively involved and serving at church is a great way to grow in Christ as our identity.
