Verses 1 thru 6
Peter states… Therefore
Prior
Since Christ has suffered in the flesh
Arm yourselves (a command <> Aorist Imperative Verb
With same mind
understanding / mindset
way of thinking
Peter Gives the reason
Because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin
Then he gives the purpose...
it’s time out for living in the flesh any longer
satisfying the fleshly desires
But… now live for God’s will… His desire for theirs and our lives
Peter continues with further expansion of the reasonings
He says… for they / you / me have spent ENOUGH TIME...
Doing what the Gentiles do… aka what unbelievers do… what the world does!
Carrying on in
Unrestrained behavior
Evil Desires
Drunkenness / Drugs
Orgies / Sexually Immorality
Carousing aka Drinking Parties
Lawless Idolatry
Peter in continuation…
Says that the people {the Gentiles} they (these Christians & us} used to participate with {the people who you / we used run with} in all of the prior areas of sin … they’re surprised that they no longer do so...
The result is…
that they slander them / us
They will have to give an account / answer to God
Peter explains the Reason & the Purpose for this as well
This is why the gospel was preached...
although they may be judge by the world / human standards
they might live in spirit according to God’s standards
Go over all summary of 4
Quick Summary of verse 1 - 6
Peter tells these Christians that {they / we} must follow Christ’s example. = suffering in the flesh.
This is the mindset that {they / we} are to have and adapt to… there is an understanding that since Jesus suffered… {They / we} too will have to do so as well.
Because truly following Christ involves being done with sin… done with the way {they / we} used to live…
And when you do so, those whom {you / we} used to sin with (the world aka satan) will slander {them / me.}
But the overall reason and purpose is the preached gospel and how it transforms lives towards living for God’s standards
Verses 7-11
Verse 7
Pronouncement… Peter is making an authoritative declaration
The end of all things is near;
Command… Peter is commanding his audience here perform and action...
Therefore be alert and sober minded for prayer
Verse 8
Manner… Peter is asserting how to be alert and sober minded
Above All… maintain constant love for one another
Reason… Peter is providing the grounds or basis for what he is saying here
since love covers a multitude of sins
Verse 9
Manner… Peter is continuing to assert… how to be alert and sober minded
Be hospitable to one another without complaining.
Verse 10
Peter makes a comparison now
Just as
Topic
Each one
Comparison
has recieved a gift
Gift: even though written in the singular… doesn’t mean that you only have 1 gift...
Spoke yesterday… knowing your gift… and looked at Romans 12:6-8
Prophesy = the ability to deliver representative declarations of the mind, will, or knowledge of God… do so depending solely on God
In ministry / Service = work that is done by a person or group that benefits another… do it wholeheartedly = this is why we must as Peter says… be of sober mind
Teaching = the ability to impart skills or knowledge to others aka to educate.
Some of in here are teachers… by profession… that’s a gift that God gave you…
Some of us have the DESIRE
Know if it’s your gift though…
Desire is good… let’s not discount desire {especially here} because if you have the desire… it may be your spiritual gift and you never really knew it…YET there are times that though so… but that not your spiritual gift…
Exhortation = You’re supportive and encouraging… when is called upon in this area… you respond in action.
Giving = to give out of one’s portion or share… do so liberally - w/ generosity
Leadership = some of us or natural born folks who take charge… Do so with diligence and zeal… in a sense embrace the responsibility associated with it...
some of are leaders… but mismanage it… power hungry, abusive, etc… taking responsibility here, as a Christian… we do so in LOVE
Merciful/Kindness = naturally compassionate towards something or to someone.
hone it/to sharpen it
How???
Manner
use it… to serve {minister to} others
as good stewards
Stewards
of the varied grace of God
manifold / multifaceted grace
Verse 11
Peter continues on the expound upon what he has just said
Using 2 gift examples {these aren’t the only 2 gifts that God has given them or us} but in other words he tells them/us that in using these gifts.
the purpose of using these gifts… is that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ… in everything
to the praise and glory that God deserves and are His!
Verses 16 and 19 kinda sums it up
16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.
19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
