Introduction.
We live in a fast-paced world of ever-changing dynamics, technology, socioeconomic and political, Church and family, and issues that cause stress, fatigue, and anxiety about our future. The problems are complex and multifaceted, and there are no simple answers. However, we may find some consolation from God’s word and the Eucharist today that may remedy our fears and anxieties.
Body.
The apostle Paul, in our second tells us, “I should like you to be free of anxieties.” It sounds easier said than done. Occasional worry about the future is natural, but constant worrying becomes an anxiety disorder when it starts interfering with our normal daily activities, job performance, schoolwork, and relationships. I believe the apostle is asking us to free ourselves of all such activities and thought processes that distract us, cause us to have internal conflicts in doing what God is calling us to be and do single-mindedly one day at a time, and one moment at a time, and have faith and trust that God will take care of all our needs as we serve him in whatever state of life we are, single or married. Thus, Jesus tells us repeatedly in the Gospels not to be anxious about anything, our present and future welfare, and not to be afraid or anxious about professing our faith in Christ. Jesus tells us to stop worrying because we cannot change the smallest things by worrying because he promised to take care of all our needs. Interestingly, in our Gospel today, even the unclean spirit is rightly anxious and panicking about its future destiny in the presence of Jesus Christ, unable to lie in Christ's presence, loudly Proclaims who Christ is in front of everyone in the synagogue. “I know who you are—the Holy One of God!" Here, we can see God's love, mercy, and wisdom in Christ for using this poor man to declare Christ's identity and simultaneously free him from the unclean spirit. We have an awesome God to love and trust our future to His Majesty the King of King and Lord of lord Jesus Christ.
Conclusion.
What’s making you anxious today? PAUSE. Bring it to the presence of His Majesty at the Eucharist. And let the word of God take root in our hearts. Again, the Apostle says, “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then, the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (say, Paul) Then the God of peace will be with you. Phil 4:6-8
