True story: The story is told of the life of one Ricky Hill. Ricky had a dream of hitting home-runs in Major League Baseball. He would stand in the woods near his home everyday with a stick hitting rocks with the vision of being able to play professionally. But, there was a problem; Ricky could walk or run. He was born with a condition making it challenging for him to walk without braces on his leg.
His father told him a young age that he would never use those legs on the big stage and that he should just forget about it.
Ricky did not let his father’s word stop him from working on his skill. He played with other kids in the neighborhood and the called him names like robot boy. He was bullied because we was not like other kids.
As he got order he was able to take the braces off his legs, but had another setback. Because of his bone condition, he developed a degenerative spine. At the age of 18, Ricky had the spine of a man in his late 60’s. The doctors told him to give up his dream or else his body would begin to break down.
Despite all of the odds he faced, Ricky got his chance to show the world he was born to be a baseball player. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1975 and played four years in the minor leagues.
Ricky’s story is the story of a bold adventurer. There was nothing about his physical attributes that support his dream of playing professional baseball. His dad was opposed to him playing and doctors thought he was out of his mind pursuing this idea a playing the game he loved.
How did he overcome these obstacles? Courage
This is what bold adventurers do; they use courage to live God standards. They are willing to endure hard and uncomfortable situations for their good and the good of those around them.
My question for you today is will you be that Bold Adventurer? Are you a bold adventurer?
No one wakes up says: hey, I am excited about enduring uncomfortable situations. So many of you choose to be bold on a daily basis.
Parents have heard about kids who are bullying other kids. Kids who like to call classmates bad names. Kids who joke about how people look and smell; kids who pick on others because they are smaller than others.
We need bold adventurers to step up for their friends and not laugh when others are trying to tear them down.
We need bold adventurers who are willing to have courage to face the challenges of learning new things and expanding their horizons.
How is this done? What is our guide to do this? God’s standard; God’s word.
Joshua is young, he’s a new leader and the people don’t believe he was equipped to lead the children of Israel. He was fearful. Joshua knew he was not a great leader like his predecessor Moses. I can imagine Joshua asking God to find someone else.
God’s word to him was to be strong and very courageous.
This is the same thing God’s words is inspiring us to do. Be strong and be courageous.
In 1939, Adolf Hitler invaded Poland starting a conflict we know as World War 2. Winston Churchill, prime minister of the United Kingdom, had to make a decision of how they would respond to Hitler’s large army and the terror they began to spread around.
Churchill proclaimed to his country that they would fight evil and would never surrender. “We will fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender!”
It took a bold and courageous leader to stand against evil and rally his country to fight for freedom.
Ultimately, Jesus is the greatest and Boldest Adventurer of them all. He leaves heaven to take on His earthly adventure of proclaiming the kingdom of God and died to Boldly bring salvation to all who believe. The scripture says this:
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Let’s use the remainder of this year to demonstrate being a Bold Adventurer for God’s Glory. . . . Let’s pray.
Supporting Verses:
“Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” - John 20:21
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, my only aim is to finish the race amd complete the task Jesus has given me - the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” - Acts 20:21
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us” - Romans 8:37
Jesus is the ultimate Bold Adventurer: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels or demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any power, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:38-39
