The Son, who had already been a person in eternity, took on a human nature
This happened at the incarnation where Jesus Christ joined Himself with humanity
Luke 1:31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.”

How can God and humanity be united in one single person.

This can be one of the most difficult of all theological problems.
Nevertheless, Holy Scripture provides us with some insights about this eternal and irrefutable truth
Divinity and Humanity
The seed of the woman
Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.””
The Protoevangelium
The First Gospel announcement
Confirms Jesus as “The seed” of The woman (Eve)
Confirms His humanity
Luke 3:38 “the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the Son of God.”
Luke’s ( Luke 3:23-38) genealogy helps us understand the fullness of Jesus’ humanity without negating His deity.
Jesus’ Human nature
The Word nature needs to be understood as a commonly used word used to designate the divine or human elements in the person of Jesus Christ
“Nature” when used of Christ’s divinity refers to: –all that belongs to His deity, –including all the attributes of God
“Nature”when used of Jesus’ humanity refers to:–all that belongs to His humanity, –including all the attributes of being human
Sum total of qualities
•Another way to describe nature is that it refers to the sum-total of “all” the essential qualities of a thing, which makes it what it is.
The Incarnate Christ is ONE person not 2 people becoming one, not God and a human coming together
This is very important to understand
Colossians 1:19 “For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,”
In Him (Jesus)
The Fullness (the fullness of God)
Dwell where? (in his person)
The word Fullness also points us back to the temple/tabernacle where Gods glory and presence dwelled among the children of Israel
God instructed the children of Israel to build a tabernacle for Him
Exodus 25:8 “And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.”
This is also shown through the gospel of John as The Word which is Jesus “Tabernacled” amongst us
John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt(among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Gods presence in Jesus Christ, which makes Him God in flesh.
John 14:11 “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.”
God in Christ reconciling The world. He is the only one worthy.
2 Corinthians 5:19A “that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself,
Immanuel: God with us
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
God with us in human form
Matthew 1:23 ““Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.””
Matthew shows us the Fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy in Jesus Christ.
Understanding that God with us points us back to the garden where He dwelt with Adam and Eve, but this relationship was broken because of sin.
After the fall in the Garden after Adam and Eve were removed, God was still in the midst of humanity, but direct fellowship between Him and humankind was broken.
Gods plan was to bring humankind back into fellowship with Him by judging sin in the flesh through Christ.
Romans 8:3 “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,”

The Incarnation

John 1:14A “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
Hypostatic Union: Theological term which was brought forward by the church fathers to mean “a person” “The Word becoming flesh”
In The Person of jesus Christ God and man came together perfectly Philippians 2:5–7 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
Christ:The Kinsman redeemer
The Kinsman redeemer in Hebrew means Goel. This means that a relative had to have rights of redemption over a deceased relatives household
Please read the book of Ruth in your own time, the kinsman redeemer typology in this short book of the bible gives us a view of Christ.
Jesus Christ being fully human and fully divine in nature was able to redeem us from the curse of sin & death
Galatians 3:13 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),”
Christians are redeemed from the curse of the law and the power of sin through The blood of Jesus
Ephesians 1:7 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”
Colossians 1:14 “in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
Romans 3:24“being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,”
Paul taught throughout the new testament that through Jesus’ sacrifice we are redeemed, our sins forgiven, & we are now rescued from Gods judgement.
The only way Jesus was able to do this was if He Himself took on flesh to become our kinsman
1 Timothy 3:16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God (Jesus Christ) was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.”
Jesus is the Monogenes: The Only Begotten, Divine Son. He was before time began creation was made through Him
Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Jesus is the I AM

The name God gave to Moses in Exodus (we will look at this in our last part “Christ in the old testament”)
Exodus 3:5–6 “Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.”
Exodus 3:14 “And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ””

Jesus is fully God and fully man for eternity

Even after Jesus rose from the dead he still has a body
It was a bodily resurrection
Luke 24:37–38 “But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?”

As Jesus rose bodily His flesh saw no corruption

Acts 2:30–31 “Therefore,(David) being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.”

The Davidic covenant

2 Samuel 7:12 ““When your days(Davids day’s) are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.”

Jesus The seed of David

Romans 1:3 “concerning His (God’s) Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,”

Jesus is a direct descendant of King David

Matthew 1:6–7 “and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa.”
In the Gospel of Matthew, Matthew being the writer wants the reader to understand that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Davidic king

The Prophecy of Micah fulfilled

Micah 5:2 ““But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.””
The word everlasting literally means from the days of eternity
Bethlehem is where King David is from
If He Jesus was from eternity, yet had to be a descendant of David, that means Jesus Christ was going to come from eternity and take on a human nature
This is theme of a Davidic King runs all throughout the old testament
Isaiah 11:10 ““And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.””
The Throne & Kingdom of King Jesus is eternal it will see no end
Luke 1:32–33 “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.””
Hebrews 1:8 “But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.”
When Jesus resurrected He sat at The Right Hand of Majesty
With all Power and Authority
Hebrews 10:12 “But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,”

Jesus Christ as our High Priest

Hebrews 4:14–15 “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
The Key in this verse is“He was tempted as we are, yet without sin”
Jesus was the sinless one
Another thing to look at
“As we are” The writer of Hebrews makes the connection that as human beings we can be tempted, Jesus being human was able to be tempted but yet never sinned.

In conclusion

The Doctrine of Christ is critical to understand because most cults, false religions, and secular scholars, bring Jesus down to only being human.
