Read 1 Peter 1:13-21
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
How do we conduct ourselves in light of our great salvation
Peter implores us because of this great salvation
Because of this great hope we have in this salvation that was secured for us by Jesus
We should live accordingly
and how do we live????
It starts with how we think
In our minds
The Mind of an exile
The Mind of an exile
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Preparing our minds
Notice this isnt a physical battle
Peter doesnt say prepare your body, but prepare you mind for action
Prepare you mind to live in light of this salvation
Prepare yourself that you will now need to live differently
Your thoughts will be different
Your actions will also change
Your hope will change
Your mind is to be sober
Thinking clearly
Using biblical judgement
Growing in discernment
And this may seem futile
It may seem that we are never going to get there
You may have committed your life to Jesus
You may have prayed over and over for God to change something in your life
You may see the same sin in yourself that you have tried to conquer time and time again
You may think I have done all of this but still fall short WHY????????
A sober mind that is prepared for action has set their hope fully on what Christ has accomplished
Our great salvation
We are comforted to know that at the end of all things we will be perfect and complete lacking in nothing because of what Christ has done for us
Knowing that we have persevered through all the discouragement
This mind prepared for action reminds us that we are called to something greater
and that produces action in our lives
1 Peter 1:14–16 “14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.””
Obedient children
We dont need to know much just what are parents teach us about how we act
recognize there is an old and a new way to act
our dead hearts acted in a certain way
Our new mind should recognize this and be transformed
Understand who has called you
The bar is set high for the exile
They are to live a life that is set apart
They are to live a life seperate from this world just as our God is seperate from this world
If the exile looks like everyone in the country they are no longer exiles
The exiles in babylon
The Exile lives differently because we are called by someone greater
Be Holy because God is holy
The Exiles conduct
17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Following on in this we are to conduct our selves with fear
Why????
Because we dont want to bring reproach on our king
As Exiles we want to be good representations of our king
We are exile who were bought with a price so we should act accordingly
we can worship and Glorify GOd for what he has done and we will do this through out lives and conduct
We are called to be representations of our King here in exiles
