Have you ever wondered how everything came to be?
How did we get where we are today? How was everything created? Who was everything created by?
The World wants to say that everything happened by chance.
The World wants to say that the world and everything in it was a cosmic accident.
What’s interesting is that, in everything else, we recognize that a created thing has a creator. For example:
-If you see a cake, you know that someone baked it.
-If you see a building, you know that a builder or builders built it.
-If you see a machine, you know that someone made it.
But then, when it comes to human beings and other things God has created, the world wants to say that it’s all by chance?
I don’t buy it.
We know that’s not true.
To find out what where we actually come from, and why we were created, we have to look to God’s Word.
Lesson
Lesson
Genesis 1:1 tells us that:
Genesis 1:1 “1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Over the span of the 6 days, God created everything. Then on the 7th day, He rested. Not because He got tired, or because He needed a break, but to model for us how we should rest because we do need rest.
What’s unique about us as humans is that we are God’s special creation. No other thing that God has made is made in His image.
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”
Man in “our” image. That is the trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - one God, in three distinct persons.
27 So God created man in his own image;
he created him in the image of God;
he created them male and female.
God made human beings - male and female - all in His image. We are to reflect our maker.
But sin distorts this image. We are still made in God’s image, but the image is sort of like a broken mirror. Sure, you may be able to see some things through the broken glass, but it isn’t a clear or perfect picture.
Only through Jesus can that image be restored and made perfect again.
Application
Application
So what’s the point of all this? Why were we created? Why do we exist?
Well, simply put, God created you to know Him!
He is your creator, you are His creation.
He knows what’s best for you.
(Use computer example)
Imagine that I created this computer. I know what it takes to make this. I know how it works best. I am it’s creator, and it is my creation.
Now imagine if someone else came along and said:
“you didn’t make that! It came up all on it’s own.”
Wouldn’t that be silly?
Then, imagine someone said,
“That computer isn’t for computing things, it’s made to make toast”
That would be even more silly!
Both of those things are not true.
In the same way, when the world says that we are all here by chance, and that we exist for any other purpose than knowing God, we can be sure that’s not true.
God’s Word tells us otherwise.
One of my favorite sayings of all time comes from the Westminster ShorterCatechism. The very first question in the catechism asks, “What is the chief end of man?”
In other words, what is the main purpose for mankind?
The answer is this:
“The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever”
But how can we do this?
How can we know our Creator, glorify Him, and enjoy Him forever?
Only through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Jesus says,
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the only way to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. There’s no other way.
You were created by God, to know Him, glorify Him, and enjoy Him forever.
