Genesis 3:5 ESV
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
As I mentioned before, Eve's motivation for eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was that she wanted to be like God. Before, God was the judge of good and evil, and God and God's Word were the standard for discerning good and evil. But now she wanted to be the judge of good and evil without God or God's Word, and she wanted to be the law maker by herself. She no longer wanted to be dependent on God, she wanted to be the law maker by herself. They wanted to be supreme beings. It was a kind of rebellion. They had been God's representative ruler on earth, but now she wanted to be king.
Genesis 3:6 (ESV)
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise
These three temptations are described by the apostle John as follows.
1 John 2:16 (ESV)
16 For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life-is not from the Father but is from the world.
- Lusts of the flesh: appetite, desire to sleep, desire to sex.
- Lust of the eyes: lust of possession
- The pride of this life: fame-seeking, self-esteem
In these three forms, we are tempted every day.
This is how Eve was tempted and ate the forbidden fruit.
Genesis 3:7–8 ESV
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Eventually they began to recognize that they were naked, and they became hiding beings at the sound of God's voice. To cover their shame, they made coverings from fig leaves. Let's observe the characteristics of these coverings.
1. it only covers a small part of the body
2. it withers quickly and doesn't last long.
We humans have created many devices to cover our shame: religions, philosophy, family honor, etc. But none of them could cover our guilt and shame, and their effect was short-lived. Then God appeared to them and made them different clothes and covered them.
Genesis 3:21 ESV
And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
We can only assume that some animal was killed in order for God to make them garments of skins. It is clear that there was some kind of bloody sacrifice to cover their shame. In verse 15, God gave the promise of the offspring of the woman, and as if to validate that promise, God made them garments of skins through some sacrifice.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Hearing this promise, Adam named his wife Eve, which means mother of all living, for all who will come to life in the future will come to life through the redemption of Jesus Christ, who will come through the woman.
Genesis 3:20 ESV
The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
